Newton Made Some Pens Again

Hey everybody! Hope you're all doing well. It's cold here and it hurts to be cold. I'm probably working slower than I should be and just not motivated to go shiver my knees together at the lathe. :) But here's what I've done recently. Hope you like it.

Holler at me if you have any questions. :)

Thanks

I really like the looks and shape of the pen with the yellow back drop. Love the color combo too!

That's quite the variery of colours and styles! Great stuff! The red/blue swirl pen with the multiple silver bands is very impressive.

I do have one question: what tool do you use to shape your pens on the lathe? I am having trougle with consistancy of width, and finding it hard to to the gentle tapers of most cigar shapes.

I do all my shaping with whatever carbide cutting tool I have in there - either the triangle shape, or circle shape, and then clean it up with a file.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File_(tool)

And then clean it up with sandpaper and polishing and buffing.

You need good mandrels though.

AH... I hadn't thought of that. I started lathes with a masochistic streak, and only used traditional tools, but these new carbide tipped ones are fantastic. I had never thought of using a plain file though. I appreciate all the inspiration you and others have put forth here. If only I had the courage to post pictures of my acheivements. I have a pen i have nicknamed "turd". from ebonite, because that's what it looks like. All the parts fit, just ugly!

Here's one I rebuilt from a broken to pieces Duofold. I made a new cap and barrel and had to rebuild the section because the grip part of it spun freely, making it hard to screw the section into the barrel.

You can see a section part way disassembled here.

I built a new black grip and brass threaded tenon. I reused the nib housing and rings.

I made this one as a gift for a radio personality that I really like, but it's too big for her hand so she's sending it back with notes for me and I'll be making her a slimmer pen. :)

Amazing pens (again)!

The Shinobi is a killer design, it ALWAYS seems to look great. I particularly love the materials and colours on this last one.

The black and green Orville and Moody are lovely too

Really like that last Shinobi... You have lots of nice pens, I particularly like the Orville - Green ebonite and clear green acrylic - slim, short that you have on your web site..... Good work!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
