Two very nice and not commonly encountered birds arrived upon my doorstep this week. I present you a 500NN Light Tortoise w/ F nib and 140 Gray w/ OM nib.

PELIKAN - Too many birds in the flock to count. My pen chest has proven to be a most fertile breeding ground.

That's just beautiful. What a high piece for any collection. Congrats!

Thanks all. They are both in excellent shape. Very excited to add these to the flock. Will be working on a post for the 140s at some point in the future of which the gray will be prominently featured.

The grey is lovely, glad it is in excellent condition.

A fine addition to the flock. Look forward to your post in due course.

Today I make some shots from my vintage Pelikans collection and decided to share some of them, which excited my most in already ending 2018. Some pens come last month -Milano and custom sleeve 100N, some earlier this year.

So, from the left:

1) 100N black Milano version;

2) 100N black WW2 period pen.

3) 100N black 1949 export pen

4) 100N "lizard"/custom sleeve on earlier barrel.

the same pens, uncapped:

Indeed, a lovely set of vintage Pelikans, especially fond of the 100N... all variants I need to get at some point. I do have one black "Export" marked 100N though but I would like a better specimen (some hairline cracks in the ink window plus it is cloudy).

Thank you,mana.

Initialy mine 100N export marked pelikan arrived with same problems- cracked barrel, crystalized ink window and hard signs of age. But couple of hours carefull restoration, polishing.. and voila. This is the one of advantages of pelikans- simplicity and interchangables.

Yup, the 100N is by far my absolute favorite pen, especially the post war models with the synthetic piston seals. And the nibs on those, especially the ones in B+ sizes...

Lovely pens and thank you for sharing. I am tempted to acquire one.

The 100N is a robust writer.

Very nice desk set. Congratulations.

On my side today I found this calligraphy set (in practice a maroon M150 with some nibs, the only item missing is the key to unscrew the nibs):

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
