Adding To The Flock -2018

All of my pen purchases are planned. I make lists, etc etc, but mostly that's to remind myself of the ones that caught my eye and haven't made it home yet. I simply "plan" to buy every pen I see, then neither my wife nor I are surprised when I do ;)

Actually, the 2019 "Wish List" has the following Pelikan pens on it already:

. . . . . . .

That is serious collecting and $$$.

I am nowhere near that level and probably never will be.

There is no method as such, just whatever comes my way. Depending upon the pen and price, I take a decision.

I do keep a list to avoid repeating models and try to cover as many brands as possible.

The M640 Eternal Ice, Niagara Falls and Indian Summer are of interest and I would get one of them, price and condition dependent.

I would like the M1000 version of the M815 rather than the Stresemann.

Money? Heck, I just got an email from Nigeria telling me they were putting 25.2 million bucks in my account... I can buy any pen I want! :lticaptd:

It might be nice to see what the Stresemann would look like with Gold furniture... a Photoshop idea for the next rainy day.

Damn it. Last year they only offered me 11.6 million.

I am hoping for a better offer this year, no luck yet.

The Stresemann will probably come with RT rather than GT. IMO, GT would look odd.

Sometimes I do "planned" purchases. But a lot of time, especially with vintage pens, it's more like "stumble upon" purchases.

I only purchase when I see a pen and my head says "gotta get me one of those". Unfortunately it results in a lotta money spent and a bunch of pens. Is there a Pen Lover's A A?

Well the flock continue to grow, thanks to good discounts during the Pelikan hub (which was in a store) I added a M605 transparent white and an M200 Smoky Quartz. By the way I like very much the olivine ink received as gift.

Picked up a M600 M Green Striated. First ink is Edelstein Olivine. I am getting used to the M nib as I am used to a EF/F

I started out with those F nibs. I've come to fully embrace thee wider nibs. Pelican 200 series M nib is close to three M ballpoints I grew up with.

Didn't come to the Dallas Pen Show expecting to find another Pelikan. After all, I'd bought a yellow M910 Toledo just a couple of weeks ago.

But it's been my experience at pen shows that one often finds that irresistible pen at that irresistible price on the last day of the show, and so it was that I dropped by the table of my good friends Joel Hamilton and Sherrell Tyree, two of the nicest of the many nice people I have met in the pen business. There I found a pen that I'd not had the opportunity to see before, the M800 limited edition Blue Ocean. I had seen photos of the Blue Ocean before, but nothing prepared me for the beautiful color of this pen. To top it off, it bore a factory oblique triple-broad nib. Joel conjured a very attractive price, and I came away with my most important purchase of the show, just beating out my Montegrappa Extra 1930 in yellow celluloid.

The show again has been a gathering of great friends, as well as a huge success for the vendors. We had terrific crowds both yesterday and today. Congratulations to everyone involved, and many hugs to all my friends, whom I don't get to see nearly often enough.

I've been very fortunate to acquire matching numbered Radens, the Platinum being the newest addition. Both pens are #49/388 which is exciting for no real reason than it makes me happy. Love the look of these.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
