Lamy 2000 - leaking from nose cone seam?

J English Smith

Recommended Posts

I got my new Lamy 2000 today, but after several hours or working with it, I am getting a consistent seeping/leaking from the point where the nose cone meets the body. I have tried re-cleaning and tightening several times, but that does not seem to help. I tried a change of ink and that did not do anything else either. Could the pen be missing a part? Is there an o-ring that goes up inside the nose cone that is missing? Should I just send the pen back to Lamy?

Disappointing...I've been out of town for a week and was looking forward to using it tomorrow at work - rats!

That's an odd place to have a leak... is the ink flow very dry? I'm wondering if you need a good ammonia flushing through the feed. If that doesn't work, definitely take it back for service. The only leaks I've ever heard about is ink creeping from under the hood.

This is a rather common problem with the Lamy 2000. It is much complained of on FPN. The right words will not repair your pen, but will help you to generate results with the search function of the software. We sophisticates write "section" or "hood" where you have written "nose cone," and "barrel" where you have written "body."

When this warm-hearted group gets the idea that you are complaining of a leak from between the section and the barrel, the flood gates of sympathy will open to you. You can also read a lot on FPN. Here is a link to only one such thread. You are not alone:

To judge from earlier postings, you are best advised to return the pen for repair. Sorry to bring bad news. As in many other areas of life, pen craziness brings quite a lot of deferred gratification.

Thanks guys! Both comments helpful. Looking at the 2000's design now for the first time, the design seemed like something that could generate problems if things don't fit 100.00% up there.

This was an eBay buy, so I will use Lamy's repair service. I trust them to make it right for a modest additional investment - that's why I went ahead and ordered. At $50, I knew I could not go wrong...

I tried some Waterman's violet this morning - and that does seem to be better (leaking-wise), but I am still going to have them work on it. I may even have them change over to an XF nib if that does not add a ton to the cost.

And yes, I'm getting used to deferred gratification. (Actually, that slows me down on making new purchases, so it's not all bad - helps me preserve my marriage!)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
