Sheaffer School Cartridge Pen - I Ruined It

Hello everyone!

I am sorry to come here with a downbeat post to begin the new year.

I have a Sheaffer School Cartridge Pen I bought when I was 12 years old or so (now 48; I should know better). It was getting difficult to clean, the fluid would not flow. I use a rubber ear cleaning bulb to push water through. It used to flow freely when I cleaned it between ink changes. During last cleaning it would not pass, just a dribble, with force.

I tried soaking it in distilled water for weeks. I even bought a small ultrasonic cleaner: ran that for 10 minutes a day. I still could not get any fluid to pass through it.

So I tried Dettol and lost track of time.

The nib, feed and collar are now separate. The nib is fine. The feed is distorted and the section is gummy, lightly discolored grey and slightly swollen. I can reassemble it but the threads are so off that the barrel will not meet up and attach; the threads are soft and becoming deformed.

It is my own fault. I have accepted this. It may be symbolic of my lost childhood. Continuing the symbolism: I would like to restore it if possible.

Does the community here think that is possible? Can one source the pieces I ruined and attach the original nib? Or, is it a lost cause?

Any advise or input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Ralph

I would imagine that you would have to search for a donor pen for the parts that you need.

Try auction sites to see if you get any luck. Other than that, sorry for your loss and i hope you do manage to get your pen repaired.

Can't tell you how many of those pens I had and trashed. I really don't know why you'd bother repairing one. You should be able to get one off of e-Bay (yeah, I hate them) for the cost of a beer.

A picture of the pen please? You don't have to show the section, but there were different school pens....

The simplest thing would be to buy a donor pen of the same type on ebay and use its section. If you really wanted to use your nib, it is my understanding that the nib and are friction fit in most of these pens. Most of these types of school pen come up on ebay. There are open nib pens and the semi-hooded pens. Buy one in the right nib size and color, if applicable, and use it.

I lost mine that I purchased in the '70s, but easily found an exact replacement on ebay, so you should be able to find a donor pen to match.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
