Greetings... And Merry Christmas

Hello Everyone!

I'm from Newark, Ohio and a member of the Ohio Pen Club. I am very new to the fountain pen community; but everyone has been so helpful and welcoming.

My interest started with a fountain pen from my husband. He ordered it by mistake (meant to order a rollerball). After countless videos and help from the Ohio Pen Club, I learned how to fill it and the rest is history.

During my first pen show, I spent all my money in the first 2 hours. So I spent the remaining days at the show drinking and meeting new people.

There is LOTS to learn, so I welcome any advice.

Welcome home. Pull up a stump and set a spell. When it comes to fountain pen shows Dante got it right; "Lasciate ogne speranza, voi ch'intrate"!

Howdy from Pittsburgh! Welcome to FPN! I"m guessing that the show you're talking about is the Ohio Pen Show. I always have a blast at that show: this year I picked up a couple of pens and had several others repaired, plus I was able to find an Esterbrook 9048 nib unit that was less expensive than what I'd been seeing on eBay!

So what pen do you have, and what ink are you using?

I usually suggest that new people click on the "View New Content" button when they log in (you can set it for various options, such as "past 24 hours" or "since my last visit"). That gets you a range of topics in manageable amounts; don't do what I did when I started, which was to read the ENTIRE Parker Forum. Back then (nearly six years ago at this point) it was 175 *pages* of topics.... it's much bigger now.

Also, have a look at the pinned Index to the Ink Reviews -- the sheer number of inks on the market is staggering.

Oh, you should know that we are all shameless enablers here, and will happily help you spend your discretionary budget on pens, inks, paper, repair tools, ephemera, etc. I thought I would never have more than maybe 25 pens TOTAL. And that I would never pay more than about $25 US on a pen.... :headsmack:

So what pen did you get? And what ink(s) are you using?

Welcome and Merry Christmas. You have now entered the Enabling Zone. Beware! I never thought of desk sets. Never thought about them, or wanted or needed a set. But I saw a thread about them, full of photos.... Guess who has a desk pen set! Me.

I like it a lot, but like I mentioned (enabling).

But there is lots to learn here too. And many very kind and helpful people who are willing to help with questions, offer suggestions, even search eBay for you.

On this fifth day of Christmas, I bid you, "Welcome" !

"Accidents" don't exist. I think that we are witnessing "divine intervention!" .

Which fountain pen did you get ?

Auf freiem Grund mit freiem Volke stehn.
Zum Augenblicke dürft ich sagen:
Verweile doch, du bist so schön !

A bit late, but: Hello and welcome to FPN, from Cape Town, South Africa.

To sit at one's table on a sunny morning, with four clear hours of uninterruptible security, plenty of nice white paper, and a [fountain] pen - that is true happiness!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
