Hello, everyone. Im in the US Air Force, and I just got relocated to Germany for what will probably be my last tour (Ive got 17 years in). So Im just sitting in a hotel reading about pens, and I decided to become a member of FPN. Ive browsed the site often in the past, and I really enjoy the friendly community here.

Welcome! I was recently in Europe and spent some time around Germany- I managed to pick up some great pens and inks over there. There are just so many more pen shops there than back home.

The Christmas markets are great! Ive gotten out one weekend and got pretty toasty...

I started with a few Vanishing Points about 8 years back, and I eventually got a Galaxy Raden model, which I sent to Richard Binder for some nib work. Now Ive got more than 20 pens, including a couple Lamy 2000s, some Conklins, an Edison, Visconti Homo Sapiens Bronze Age, some Kaweco Sports, Pilot Falcon, and I just received my Christmas gift from my wife, my first Montblanc; a Starwalker.

Hello and welcome to FPN, from Cape Town, South Africa.

If you ever end up travelling through Heidelberg, visit the Lamy Flagship store in the old town. Look around antique shops throughout Germany for a 30-year old (or older) Mont Blanc 149 or one of the pre WWII Pelikans. Enjoy your time there - and do visit Rothenburg ob der Tauber.

To sit at one's table on a sunny morning, with four clear hours of uninterruptible security, plenty of nice white paper, and a [fountain] pen - that is true happiness!

I like switching it up. I tend to mostly use a Lamy Safari, Lamy 2000, Vanishing Points, or Kaweco Brass Sport.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
