Sailor Procolor 500 Brief Review

Just thought I'd give a brief shoutout to this Sailor model: it's their high-end steel nibs, and I got it because I love my Pro Gear Slim/Sapporo and wanted something that would be similar but a bit cheaper.

It's a good size: similar to the 1911 regular (disclaimer: I don't have that pen, what I mainly see is that it's longer and a bit larger than my Pro Gear Slim!). You can't pick the nib size: it's an F, but it's a really nice F steel nib with some of that unique Sailor feeling--so a bit of what I'd call "pencil on paper" feeling? Stiff and with a little feedback but not scratchy. It runs slightly drier than the gold nib, about the same thickness. Very comfortable in the hand. It's a twist cap, not a snap cap, and it comes bundled with a Sailor converter in the box.

In a similar price range in Europe you have the prera: the Procolor is more comfortable to hold unposted for me, and in general more comfortable to write for long periods of time. It writes slightly thicker and a smidge drier (though the Prera I do have was *so* dry that I needed to fiddle with the tines to get it to stop scratching on regular paper!). I'd rank this as similar to my beloved TWSBI 580 (comparison pic below): the TWSBI wins hands down on ink capacity, but this wins hands down on nib quality (and if you find heavy pens tiring this is lighter and easier to hold).

Build quality seems reasonable for the price range, and it comes in a bunch of gorgeous colours: this is Stardust which is black with blue-ish sparkles, and they also have a very nice blue demonstrator model.

(this is my first review so I hope I'm doing it right!).

Gorgeous pen!!!!

I love Sailor!!! I looked at Procolor but they're somewhat more difficult to acquire in the states so I don't have one (yet). I love the sparkles!

Good review, interesting pen, I'd only come across the blue demonstrator, your pics show it's nicer than what I'd seen on ebay.

Aw thank you!

If you love Sailor you'll definitely love this one. I had to order mine online though: hard to find here as well.

I originally ordered the blue demonstrator but they were out of stock everywhere and I didn't want to wait for a hypothetical restock.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
