Eversharp Doric Found

Ls,

Addicted to fountainpens for two years I like the hunt for the, every time changing, grail-pen.

In these two years I collected about a dozen fountain pens. My goal is to collect the best pens off the “best” brands I like in basic models: no limited editions for me but just their best plain top model, or well, near top I can afford. More and more I am focused at vintage pens: more affordable and nice writers.

Occasionally I run into an interesting option (I think) in which I must decide quickly about something I really do not know a lot about but that attracts me very much.

After a quick read about Eversharp Doric I decided to buy this fountain pen for only E24, - with no additional information about the condition of the pen.

When it arrived: oeps…..

Almost new. I really do almost not see any signs off usage. The celluloid lespecially ooks brand new: no decolourization, no scratches, just nothing that shows its age. Only thing is some minor aging off the brassing. But then again: hard to see.

It is a beautiful almost brand new Eversharp Doric in Kashmir (?) celluloid with a 14k nib engraved with “flexible”.

Now that the pen looks unused this could be caused by its history: one defect on tine that prevented usage. In relation to this some notices and questions:

  1. the very end off the left tine (say last 1.5 mm) stood op in angle of 45 degrees and side worth also about 45 degrees. Knowing it could be a rather expensive fountain pen but as always eager to fix things myself It took me some booze (courage), time, patience etc. to fix this. I worked by feeling more than by sight because off the minor size off “operation” area. It was all nail work. Result: I think perfect. Trying the nib, I experienced it was extremely scratchy. Using my loupe (15x) I noticed the “sweet spot” was more or less a very small square with very sharp edges. I’m still wandering about this: is this an italic nib in a fine nib size? Could it be that the nib never has been used (considered its sharpness)? Something else? Could you comment on this?

Anyway. I took the micromesh starting with grit 8.500 (didn’t dear to go lower) and worked with 8500 and 12000 up and down. Now it is a very smooth wringing wet nib. Problem completely solved. For flex: I found you really must push it and I do not intend doing this (to often).

  1. So, may be the damaged nib prevented usage. Their might be a relation to a minor capping problem: normally I think the cap would close with 4 turns. This one stops turning after 3/4 off a turn. I am pretty sure this is caused by some shellac residue near the threads that prevents a full turn. All the threads seem normal to me: on the section and on the inner cap. I leave it this way and won’t separate the section from the barrel because everything works fine. The lever operates - and the pen fills perfect, probably a new sac already was installed so no risk for taking things apart to solve the cap closing “problem”. But if the pen never was used why some shellac, etc….? May by somebody has some other thought about the cap not closing well?
  1. Having read a lot about the Dorics I still do not know what model this is.! guess a Doric first generation in Kashmir. But is it the standard size? (for measures see pictures below).
  1. I intend too keep this fountain pen. But it is always interesting to know it’s value.

Greetings

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
