Newest Edition: M805 Ocean Swirl

Just a few pics of my newest bird. Its more of a teal than it is blue, though it flirts with blue depending on the light. The nib is an extra fine, and it was smooth with perfect flow right out of the box.

PELIKAN - Too many birds in the flock to count. My pen chest has proven to be a most fertile breeding ground.

I thought the Renaissance Brown was great. I like the subdued brown in the pattern. The pattern of this one reminds me of that but with quite a bit more "pop", enough that I placed an order via Massdrop this morning, as if I need another pen.

Great photo You got the color exactly. It's beautiful in the hand, but hard to photograph. I'm loving mine! I also got a good nib.

Does anyone own both the ocean swirl and the vibrant blue? I’d love to see a side-by-side picture.

A picture was posted in the other thread. Here's the post (#14 in the thread)

I don't want to think of all the times I have pulled similar tricks over the years!

Very nice, if I didn’t already have a vibrant blue, I’d consider one of these.

I pre-ordered the Ocean Swirl, then bought a Vibrant Blue. Temporary insanity.

These are very different pens, but I like the Ocean Swirl much more. The pattern is amazing, one of the most beautiful that I have seen. The only Pelikans I have seen that are as interesting are some of the 1950s tortoise patterns.

Even though this is a very different pattern than a Parker Vacumatic, the change in appearance as one turns the pen and the depth of the pattern are similar. I am not sorry that I bought the Vibrant Blue too, but it is a bit banal next to the Ocean Swirl.

Try to see one in person!

I thought about the Vibrant Blue, briefly, but decided that it was just too light and bright for my taste.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
