Does anybody have a side-by-side comparison picture of two 51 Aeros; one with the pre-1950 long clip and one with the post-51 short clip? Thank you.

Yes, the tests...not one but two.

Let us see if somebody comes forward to test her/his wits.

Interestingly I've got two two 51 demi's, one is an aero and one is a vac. One is thinner and longer, the other is shorter and girthier, and the caps do not interchange which had me confused. But I suppose a pen that lasted so long in production ought to have different versions.

The vac demi is the same diameter/girth as the standard vac (and standard aero) but shorter. And, hence, the cap would fit the standard 51 but would be shorter. The aero demi is both thinner as well shorter than the standard 51 both aero and vac. And, thus, the aero demi cap would not fit any other version 51.

Enjoy your demis.

PS.

Don't ever sell your vac demi.

I have an idea but am only going to say that I think one is a plum (demi size?)

I have a 1948 blue vac and it came to me unrestored with no clip. I restored it myself after having bought a special brass ring tool plus a replacement pump assembly. I then bought a chrome clip while I was in the US, not even knowing, at that time, there were two clip lengths. So very sadly my cap now has a shorter clip than it should have. I have never dared to try to correct my mistake in case I just repeat it again. :(

I can therefore confirm that you can't tell a clip length unless you have two side by side. -_-

Is there something special about vac demi's? I know they weren't made for very long, but I have a few (and sold a few) and they have cycled in and out of my collection.

Sorry to say you failed on two counts:

1) All three pens are Standard size.

2) The longer one is the Plum (1948). With a period correct brand new NOS transitional gold cap that has good tight clutch and hence a tight fit and making the pen look a bit longer. (The pen originally came with a lustraly cap).

And there is another test. :)

What does the (tapering) CLIP shape on the pen in the middle hints at?

:) :)

You wouldn't get even the price of the parts in them if you sell them. :) :)

The nib, the collector, the feed and above all the vac filler. So don't sell them. Use the parts in you needy standard 51s.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
