Bought A Parker Duofold For........ $20.

Well I was browsing the intricate net of eBay when I came across this, counting down from 4 minutes. Guess what I did?

Yep. $20 for a vintage, decent, working Parker Duofold JR. :bunny01: Oh, and with a 14k nib. Wow. Wow. 6 bidders at once on 5 seconds, i sniped on 2 seconds and beat someone by a dollar. I'm trying not to overreact right now. :puddle:

It came with a "platignum" fountain pen in green with silver trim and nib. No idea what that is, but it did compensate for the outrageous shipping fees. It writes? Cool.

Those so-called 'outrageous shipping fees' amount to GB£10. The minimum price available for mailing to the US with tracking is £9.25. -_-

You have obviously not seen as many 'outrageous shipping fees' that US eBay sellers put on pen listings, as I have for shipping to the UK.

I did a search and selected the first Parker Duofold with shipping to the UK. Item #372165016808

The shipping cost is $59.50 in a flat rate envelope. $59.50 converts to GB£44.67. :( That's more than the Buy it Now price of the pen.

Oh... Well, I come from a world of Amazon Prime so... I'm sorry for my ignorance. But do you think this was a steal?

Only 10 GBP shipping from the UK. Not to bad actually, especially given you are getting two pens. Wait until you pay $10.00 (or more) to ship a pen within the lower 48 states! (I am in Utah, this seller was in the Eastern Time Zone)

I think you got a bargain, and not only that, you managed to get a bargain from a seller who doesn't ship using the dreaded 'eBay Global Priority' shipping method. So yes, you did really well. :)

So I have determined that, this is indeed a UK Parker Duofold Senior. It looks so classic and just looks like a good writer. You'll be seeing pics soon if I can figure it out with my new device.

Hi Surprise,

It's definitely a UK Duofold and it does look like it may be the Senior, but I'm not an expert on UK Duolfolds... I'm not an expert on U.S. Duofolds, either. :D

One thing I can tell you about... look for an "N" on the nib... if it has one, it means the nib was stamped at Parker's Newhaven plant... which is legendary for their nibs. ;)

Enjoy your new pens. :)

You might want to learn how to read the bid history. There are only 3 bidders. 9***o bid two days ago. I***w bid just over 8 hours before you bid.

There was no bidding frenzy.

And the pen looks more like a Junior or a Victory. But could be a senior. Pictures are not clear. And the description doesn't say anything either about the size of the pen or the number on the nib.

Did you purchase the pen or won it in auction? Or did you get two Seniors ; one purchased and one won in bidding? And both for $20 each? I am asking because elsewhere you said you purchased the Duofold for $20 and did not bid on it.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
