How To Re-Blacken The Section On A Pelikan 100N

Recommended Posts

I have a few Pelikan 100Ns a couple of which have lost the black colour to their sections.

The barrel and section on these is a single unit made from a transparent green plastic with a marbled collar or applied marbling to the main barrel. The section has had some sort of black paint applied to it to give it the appearance of being made from separate pieces. Unfortunately, the black application begins to wear away with age.

Does anyone know what to use to re-blacken the section?

This is a topic that has great difference amongst collectors here on FPN. To re-blacken OR leave it alone and let the original Patena show it's age? You need to decide what makes you happy?

Use the search query here on FPN, and you should find some topic's that will give you names of products OR ways to re-blacken your pens. I've watched these for years now, as I have not yet decided on which way I will go as I have pens in the same condition as yours.

Good Luck, and keep us posted as to what you do, and find?

I found a Post for you; It is located in the Forums. Here is; Waterman 52 1/2 V Discoloration Renewal

It was posted Nov. 22, 2017.

There are two products named in this particular Post. But as I recall, Syd from the pen group Wahl Eversharp, has his own Blacken material, of which I believe I have some? BUT I have never used it......

Look Syd up and ask him about it......

The acrylic section is painted from the inside. But with what kind of paint? Unfortunately I haven't the foggiest.

Chi Town, this is different from restoring the black color of BHR which is best done by chemically altering the hard rubber itself. Mark Hoover has a great product for that.

  • 3 weeks later...

There seems to be some amount of blackening applied the the outer threads on some of my Pelikans but blackening from inside sounds like a better way to do this so I removed the residual blackening from one of my Pelikans I was restoring (leaving the threads) and applied some Pen Potion #9 to the inside. I've done the same to another and applied some to the thread area which will wear 'naturally' to the outer edges of the threads but remain in the crevices.

Seems to have worked but only time will tell if it peels off with moisture, though being secured inside I'm hoping it will hold well enough.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
