A New Favorite Ink Mixture!

Charles Skinner

Recommended Posts

I am not always happy with my adventures in "ink mixing," but last week, I came up with a "blockbuster!" Monteverde USA Erinite and Monteverde USA Mandarin Orange! Came out "brownish," but not like any brown I have ever seen. Really love it!

Charles, you really need to get your grandkids, or the neighbor kid, or someone to take pictures so we can see these fabulous mixes you keep coming up with. ;)

Glad you have an ink you enjoy.

Pictures or it didn't happen. :D

Correct!

Okay take a picture and email it to me.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Create a Ghostly Avatar and I'll send you a letter. Check out some Ink comparisons: The Great PPS Comparison

Don't know where to start?  Look at the Inky Topics O'day.  Then, see inks sorted by color: Blue Purple Brown Red Green Dark Green Orange Black Pinks Yellows Blue-Blacks Grey/Gray UVInks Turquoise/Teal MURKY

Wow! Pulled the two Monteverde colors off the Goulet Swab Shop and I'm intrigued!

I'm wondering what shade of brown these two opposites could produce?

Not sure if I want to buy them to find out.

Photos please, if able :)

Put them in a graphics program that lets you do layers and control the transparency of the layers, and you could maybe get an idea. How close that would be to reality, I can't imagine. At 50/50, I get this color (#A16336).

Ha! Liz, now you've lost me. Although I get your drift, I lack the skill ;)

Well, I'm not even sure that would be accurate, to tell the truth. Someone else who understands color (both in ink and online graphics) could tell us probably. But it was an interesting experiment, and a nice looking brown. I kinda suspect the actual color would be darker, and Charles doesn't tell us what ratios he used, so, ya know, mostly having fun. :)

Well, I suppose I can spring for samples, since it's only 2 colors and 50/50 ratio.

If I eventually do, I'll post the result.

It would be interesting to see how accurate your graphics program result is, Liz ;)

RGB is bad at imitating subtractive color mixes in the brown area. Look at any computer-generated HSL color wheel and notice the absence of browns, a painted one would have lots of them in the red/yellow/black region.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
