Hi, I just joined... I've always loved fountain pens but a conversation with some friends has recently rekindled my interest. So when I had a professional milestone, I got myself a present of Graf von Faber-Castell Tamitio--mostly because the shop had a limited range of M nibs and that's what I prefer. It's a wonderful pen, and I enjoy it a lot--but now that I started using a fountain pen again, I can't stop!

I've dug out my old trusted Montblanc Meisterstuck 144 (or 146? how do I tell the difference?) with M or B nib (I've lost the paperwork and it's hard to tell). It's now filled with Diamine Crimson, and it's amazing.

And now I seem to have fallen into a black hole of research and learning! So many pens I want to try... They are all beautiful.

Looking forward to learning a lot from you all.

Hello and welcome from a snowy Manchester :)

I've dug out my old trusted Montblanc Meisterstuck 144 (or 146? how do I tell the difference?)

well the easiest way is the cap fitment. Push on = 144 Screw on = 146

Welcome home. Pull up a stump and set a spell. And only the modern 144 had that gold band at the end of the section. The modern 144 like yours is cartridge/converter filled while the 146 is only piston filled. There is also a 147 that only uses cartridges.

Hello and welcome to FPN from a fellow Brit. :W2FPN:

The pen pictured is a Montblanc Meisterstück original Classique or 144 Classique. Differences: 144 C/C filler has band next to nib and slip on cap. 145 C/C filler has no band next to nib & screw on cap. 146 fixed internal piston filler has no gold bands except one at piston cone, and screw on cap

Welcome aboard, Hamletta, from Charleston, South Carolina. I’m not sure how much you already know about FPs, having used them in the past. But if you are a relative newbie looking to learn more about fountain pens in general, you might look at the Reference Pages on a website called Richard's Pens. It has a wealth of info about the basics of fountain pens, their use and care, and it will help you avoid making some mistakes. A couple of other websites with useful information for newbies include PenChalet, Jetpens and the Goulet Pen Company. Goulet has made quite a few videos available on their website and on YouTube, which are helpful with some procedures related to FP use. Bear in mind that how your writing appears on the page is a complex interplay of pen, paper, nib, ink, and handwriting, so be patient as you experiment with these variables. Enjoy, and have fun.

Hello everyone! Thank you for the warm welcome.

And the first puzzle solved: thank you for confirming my Montblanc is a 144. I wish I'd kept the original box!

And yes, I have the sinking feeling of having fallen down a trap door to a pleasant but rather costly underworld... So many pens! And so much to learn!

Oh, are there any meetings not on a Saturday? I'd love to come but I work on Saturdays... :( I'm so looking for fellow afflicted sufferers!

Hello and welcome to FPN, from Cape Town, South Africa.

To sit at one's table on a sunny morning, with four clear hours of uninterruptible security, plenty of nice white paper, and a [fountain] pen - that is true happiness!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
