Hello From Greece

I have been checking the forums from time to time out of curiosity, so I 'm not that new here.

I just didn't have an account.

Ever since I discovered as a kid that there are better pens than the absolutely cheapest disposable ones I have some strange attraction to writing instruments.

I still have my first 2 refillable ballpoint Parkers (they looked nice but were too dirty) and then a Parker roller (great pen but expensive for everyday use) till I discovered the felt tip liquid ink Pilots. That led me to Pilot V-Balls that got me through many years of education.

Recently I got a few Uni Jetstreams 101 and they are extremely soft writers, but they need to be held almost vertically and I don't really like that for a long time. Their plain cylindrical rubberized body though fits perfectly in my hand. I wish there were more pens like that. All ergonomical ones that force you to a particular position are not meant for me as I like to readjust my grip during words to relax my fingers.

I like the vivid blue of modern gel pens, but I usually finish one in 1-3 days, are on the expensive side and I can't really find one that doesn't write too broad lines.

About 17-18 years ago I bought my first and only fountain pen. A shiny blue and gold fine Waterman Hemisphere. I have rarely used it though. It definitely looks much more expensive than it is and has been impressing whoever has seen it.

I have only used it with blue-black Waterman cartridges occasionally, but I have decided that I hate that colour. Availability of other cheaper possibilities has increased lately and so I 'm here looking for a way to turn my fp into my main pen at least at home.

... and that's my story. :)

Welcome. if you really want to make an FP cheap buy the ink by the bottle. Since you are looking for affordable solutions I assume you use cheap paper as well so, look for ink that behaves well. I've found my good nature in Rohrer & Klingner type of Sepia and Salix (sold as gall inks). Always remember that writing experience is a four-factor business: Ink, Paper, Nib and Personality.

Welcome !

Dried ink is a clogging agent. I hope you were able to clean your Waterman Hemisphere, before putting it way. I really like the Hemisphere fountain pen, and gave them as gifts, in the 1980's.

As far as I know, all have served their owners well. One has recently been given to me, Mrs

McClure's family. She couldn't take it with her. It is one of my cherished treasures.

The pen is in perfect condition. Always cleaned it under running water before storing

Welcome , its a good time these days for new fountain pen users ; there was a time then, for quite a while , that you need to pay up to get a decent fountain pen, but no more, today even an entry level usually made a very decent writer and the ink choice these days are just amazing.

Hello and welcome to FPN, from Cape Town, South Africa.

To sit at one's table on a sunny morning, with four clear hours of uninterruptible security, plenty of nice white paper, and a [fountain] pen - that is true happiness!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
