What's Missing From My Modest Collection?

How about an Esterbrook J? Preferably one that needs a new sac. If you haven’t already replaced a sac yourself, it’s not hard to do and it will make the pen that much more special to you.

Thanks for all your suggestions - (lot of time spent on the web in the past few days).

Let the hunt begin....

1. Sheaffer Balance OS

2. ASA Nauka (glossy black, no clip) - sent a few emails but haven't heard back if that color is available. Would like to add to my "made in india" collection. (Just ordered a few cheap pens from them Beena Magic)

3. Vintage Pelikan (100 or 400)

4. Parker Duofold

5. Platinum 3776 (fairly easy to get on amazon)

(also researching the other suggestions...)

I typically look at ebay for these, but if the forum members have any other suggestions on sources please let me know.

(on second thoughts, not sure if joining this forum was a good idea for my wallet :-)

Modest collection!

For me you have some really nice pens there, that Thurya Brown 75 really floats my boat. You seem to have a pretty good eye for what you like, go with what your heart tells you, I would opine you won't go wrong.

Thank you, Greg. That Parker is special for me too - I got that as a gift 32 years ago! I am sure it is the same for every member here - each pen in their collection has a story behind it

It's so hard to point out one pen...

All the ones listed in this thread are awesome pens :)

Personally, I have been enjoying Pens from Newton Pens and Ryan Krusak Studio too :)

Dream, take one step at a time and achieve. :)

Quite an eclectic collection you have there. I especially like that Karas. A Sheaffer Cadet from the 50s would be a nice addition.

It's hard work to tell which is Old Harry when everybody's got boots on.

  • 3 weeks later...

Four new additions to the collection based on your suggestions. Merry Christmas to me!

Left to right:

1. Pelikan 400NN

2. Sheaffer Lifetime Balance Brown probably 875 (although I am still looking for the oversize version)

3. Sheaffer Touchdown

4. Esterbrook J - (hate the 2556 nib, ordered the 9048)

Couldn't decide on just one huh? You fit right in around here!

Additionally, which are your favorites from what you currently have? You'll need multiples of them....

Haha - true that my friend. My favorites are the Pelikan 120 and 400NN, Pilot VP, and for some reason the Sheaffer Touchdown.

Oh, I love that Balance. Now you just need to fill the 'missing link' between the Pelikan in green and the Balance in brown with a Pelikan brown tortoise.

Enabler? moi? :-)

Here we go again - I need to stop, please.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
