I have a MB L139G in pretty good shape except that the two silver cap rings won't shine up (the thicker gold middle ring and clip cleaned up beautifully).  Anyone know the best way to polish those silver rings without damaging the cap?  Or is the problem that the silver needs to be replated?  Sorry, I don't have a photo to post at the moment, but will try to add that tonight.  Thanks.

Tried the magical Sunshine cloth and the rings are still a dark grey.

The rings are not plated. How long did you try the silver polish cloth? That is all you should need.

Thanks Zaddick.  Will try again.  A related question - if used to polish metal parts on BHR, will the Sunshine cloth do any damage to, or alter the appearance of the BHR?  I'm only asking about smooth surfaces; I'm always reluctant to polish around chased hard rubber.

If you are concerned you can mask off the sections of hard rubber before getting agressive with a polish cloth. I am not an expert in such processes, bu tI woudl guess something like blue painters tape would be safe for a short period of time. Probably better to ask a vintage repair expert before trying. I have not bothered to mask myself, but I could only blame myself if somethingwent wrong. ;)

I prefer the appearance of unpolished silver.... and would very much like to see your fountain pen. Congrats on this acquisition.

I am usually with you brother, but sometimes these silver ring pen rings can look solid black, which I think detracts from the pen's aesthetics.

Zaddick correctly identified the problem. I have no issue with old pens looking old, but the silver rings look terrible when they are very dark. I used a Sunshine cloth last night and got enough improvement, though I stopped short of really making them shine. Here are a couple of photos of the 139 (third from the right), together with (from the left) a 126 platinum, a 138, a 129 push-knob filler, another 138 and a 234 1/2 with Masterpiece cap. Sorry if the photos arent great. Im actually getting a new smart phone today.

Wow. I am happy to trade you any smart phone you want for those pens. How about two smart phones?  :P

That is an AMAZING set of vintage MB pens.
