Someone just won an auction for a very rare Waterman nurse’s pen.

https://www.ebay.ca/itm/253279731834

The price paid was high, but this is the only example of the button on the cap that I’ve ever seen in this condition.

Waterman has made numerous pens like this in various sets like this over an extended period of time. Usually they are not particularly valuable.

I have not been able to find much catalog evidence except for the Nightingale set. And thus I have to rely on pictures of actual pens usually mentioned (often in passing) in various books or the Internet, or the pens themselves. I have been doing this for years.

However, just when I get arrogant and think I have seen all the varieties, a new one pops up.

I am trying to do a website on pens for doctors and nurses instead of a book, and would very much appreciate pictures of this pen set that I could put on the website with the permission of the photographer.

Could the lucky person who won this auction please get in contact with me and please volunteer pictures.

Thanks again,

Bobby

Grandmia Pens has a YouTube video on a similar pen https://youtu.be/bx2HfwR5bhY

I'd be interested in visiting your website on pens for doctors and nurses.  Will you please post the URL when you're published?

Thank you very much for the suggestion and the link.

If You Look Carefully at the video you will see that the signal on top of the cap is a bit different from the one in the auction and the one of the auction is something I’ve never seen in that condition.

That is why I hope that the person owns the pen will share some pictures of it.

Please wish me luck.

Bobby

Hello Bobby,

I can't help you with the Waterman's set, but I am wondering if you have seen a Gucci doctor's pen. I posted a query with some photos on the Italy-Europe forum here on FPN.

I'm wondering when it was made, how long Gucci made them, and where they were marketed.

Any information will be much appreciated.

Very interesting (if pricy).  So the set was a pen, a pencil and a thermometer in its case?  It doesn't actually say on the original listing -- I'm guessing that from looking at a zoom of the first photo.

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

Daniel

I have never seen or heard of this wonderful set from Gucci.

In times past, there were a number of Italian jewellers and goldsmiths who would make pens, including sets for physicians and nurses in their spare time.

Obviously Gucci, used its skilled artisans made this set.

You might communicate with Letizia Jacopini who is a member of the FPN as well. She has published extensively on fountain pens and seems to be very knowledgeable on Italian fountain pens. In fact she has written the two-volume book set, The History of the Italian Fountain Pen, 1900-1950. I have a copy of this excellent set.

Her handle is LetiziaJac.

I would love to see her response.

Also could I have permission to use your photos on my upcoming website as well?

If you could let me know your name and such, I would be pleased to give you credit for the photos on the website.

Best of luck in your inquiry and thank you for advising me of your set.

Thanks,

Bobby

Good news, the vendor of the auction has very kindly sent me copies of his pictures.

Thanks for all your help.
