Slippery Slope & I'm So Happy!

Recommended Posts

I waited 20 years or so before I purchased my first Montblanc -- a Classic. About a year after that, I added a Generation. Six months later, my first Meisterstuck Le Grand. And today, just a month later, I rec'd a NOS 146 that I'm going to tentatively date from the late 80s (I'd love confirmation on that). I think I might have stolen this pen from the original owner; I offered her $150 never imagining that she'd accept. But she did! I couldn't be happier.

You got a great deal! Congratulations! And your other 146 looks terrific too.

Rationalizing pen and ink purchases since 1967.

I enjoy reading about the happiness a simple pen can bring into one's everyday life. It brings a smile to my face. Congratulations on your new pens. They are wonderful

Is it my imagination or do the older M nibs on the MB's run a bit finer than the current ones?

I was actually surprised at how fine this M nib is; especially when compared to the broad nib. Seems like there's a large difference. I believe the second pen is from the 90s.

The Berlin wall came down November 1989 so at least the clip band was made before then. How about a serial number? If a serial number is present does that make it 1992?

I don't know when they swapped from black plastic screw threads to brass ones. So I can't date it from that.

Good price though.

Define "older".

Well, I can't be precise about dates but the Fitzgerald medium I have and the 90's 146 medium are very noticeably finer than my Boheme and 149 mediums (both post 2010). At least it seems this way to me.

Ah, I thought you might have meant 1930s to 1950s. My limited experience would leado me to believe lines were a bit finer in those days. For modern pens, at least 146 and 149s, I have not noticed much difference in line widths. I'd chalk up variations to hand finishing and random samples.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
