Writing Characteristics Of 3776 Fine Nib?

Recommended Posts

I'm interested in purchasing a Platinum 3776 pen with a fine nib but before doing so I want to ask about the writing characteristics of the nib. How fine is the nib compared to a Pelikan fine? Is the nib a scratchy writer? Is the nib tuned to be a wet or dry writer? Can anyone post a writing sample? Thank you for your input!

My Platinum fine nibs (3776 Century and Nakaya Portable Writer) are both one size smaller in line width than my Pelikan fine nibs (M200 and M400) and from my limited experience the Platinum nibs have more feedback than the Pelikan nibs which tend to be more wet and as such feel a bit smoother.

Note - you can smooth most any nib to make it smoother.

i find my soft fine nib on my platinum two sizes thinner than my pelikan's fine nib. And it has too much feedback for my taste.

Friedrich....Was that a 400/600/800 nib that was two sizes larger or a 200's?

There is at least a 1/2 size difference between a 200 and a 400....Besides the 200 is tipped more traditional, and not blobby (double Kugal) like a 400.

I was referring to my Pelikan Souveran M400 (2016). And yes you are right. M200's nibs are narrower than the Souveran series nibs

My 3776 Fine nib is so smooth. Its much different than a M200 F nib. Quite a bit more fine as well. its not scratchy at all. I would compare it to a TWSBI Fine nib.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
