Pelikan Rollerball Issue

Recommended Posts

Having purchased a Pelikan 800 fountain pen last year I decided to add the matching rollerball last week. I must admit my previous premium pens are all Montblanc dont hold it against me. My issue is that the rollerball in the Pelikan rattles inside the pen while writing not to the extent that theres a noticeable line difference unless you look closely but enough for me to be aware . Is this normal for Pelikan rollerballs or have I got a defective pen.

I can't speak for the R800 but I have an R200 which does not rattle. The refill sits very firmly within the pen and is held by a spring loaded section within the blind cap.

Should be an easy issue to resolve. Keep us posted.

I work on the Pelikans, the 800 pens in particular, quite often. Most of the work is what the Pelikan service center can't do, or for work that is no longer under warranty. Since this is a new pen, it should be under warranty, so you should contact the vendor, and if that fails Pelikan service in your country.

The pen should not rattle. There is a spring in the grip knob of the pen behind the black piece that you see if you look inside, that holds the refill against the cone. There isn't much else to go wrong.

Make sure that the cone is snug in the section (it unscrews), and look to see that the brass sleeve in the barrel is secure.

I'll just second what Matlock said: my r600 and r800 don't rattle either. I imagine a fix will be easy enough.

Is it loaded with a Pelikan Refill? Though many brands advertise as fitting Pelikans, I've found that none of them fit in quite the same way as the authentic version (though when I have had to buy off-brand, I've usually noticed the fit issue having to do with the diameter of the refill being slightly different and therefore not seating itself in the same way).

warranty work is free......if you are going to spend gas to go to a pen show just for that, think twice.

Definitely unusual behavior in my experience. No rattles in any of my rollerballs. I second what Ron and others have said. The vendor who sold you the pen is certainly the best first place to start.

PELIKAN - Too many birds in the flock to count. My pen chest has proven to be a most fertile breeding ground.

Just whipped out my R 805 blue o'blue rollerball to check and there's no rattle whatsoever with either the Pelikan or the OHTO (who make the refills for Pelikan). I wonder if the pin in the black cap that holds the refill in place as mentioned by Matlock and Ron is missing - that would explain the rattle.

Keep us posted.

Hi quick update I visited the pen show ( it was in my own city ) there was a Pelikan sales person there who replaced the end cap as this was found to be defective. Great service and was able to see the new range at first hand.

Yes he replaced the end cap and the rattles went . Think there was a slight defect that stopped the refil sitting correctly .

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
