New, (Sort-Of), Wa State

Hello Everyone:

Technically, I'm new here. Historically, I've been associated with my wife's fountain pen collecting for over 3 decades. It was a real hot pursuit the first several years we were married. A lot of fun, AND we could then still find things affordable. She did fairly well, but we've never been, "high end," collectors. So what she has is modest, but a great love of hers and I like it too. For about 15 years, the interest has been somewhat dormant. However, she's been reviving all of those loves lately and expressed an interest in a subscription to, "Pen World," for Christmas. I've done that.

Thinking back, I seem to recall something like, "Pen Fancier's Club," and other publications we used to get. (She still has everything she ever got) We're retired now, fixed income, and prices have gone WAY up since we began. So buying much new hardware will probably not happen. I'm writing this, now, to ask what publications all of you find useful and available in today's world???? She is capable of some repair and likes to study the subject. I'm not sure what has been published in recent years. What subscriptions would some of you suggest?

I guess the short version of this post is: What, "re-entry," items should I consider for her? (Hope that makes sense)

Merry Christmas,

Dennis in WA state

Welcome to our little corner of the universe from a pen user in San Diego. I don't subscribe to any pen magazine so I can't help you there. I suspect the biggest change has been the explosion of ink colors and I think Goulet Pens has an ink sample subscription. Happy Thanksgiving to you!

Hello and welcome to FPN, from Cape Town, South Africa.

To sit at one's table on a sunny morning, with four clear hours of uninterruptible security, plenty of nice white paper, and a [fountain] pen - that is true happiness!

Thank you, everyone. Nice welcome. Since introduction, I ordered a Pelikan 200, marbled, from Pen Chalet, for my wife for Christmas. She is devoted to her vintage pens, but likes, "something newer," once in a while." Seems the Pelikan has a, "draw." Now I've become interested in Pelikans myself. Did come across the Pelikan Perch, which is a really nice site.

Thanks again, Dennis

If you live in the greater Seattle area, you might be interested in the Seattle Pen Club which meets monthly at the Forest Park Town Center...

Interesting about the Seattle club. Unfortunately, we're 260 miles east of that. Good to know about though......in case we're over that way. Thank you.

Well, it meets most months the third Saturday at 1100. Except for the months it meets in Bellingham....

Hmmmm. Now Bellingham is a lot more interesting to me than Seattle. (I'm actually a 3rd gen. native of Skagit County, I was just run out by overpopulation and rain)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
