I'm going to suggest you not get the Gama Airborne, as it is filled with an eyedropper. Such pens are prone to burping out ink as they warm up (an effect of Charles' Law). The Airborne's feed MIGHT be able to absorb and hold the ink pushed out by the large, expanding mass of air in the barrel, but I wouldn't count on it. And as you suspect, ebonite pens tend to be rather light.

I'm a believer in experimenting with inexpensive pens to find out your real preferences. Buy an inexpensive pen (e.g., your Lamy Safari), use it extensively for at least a month or two, determine what it is that you like about the pen, and what you'd like to change about it, and use that information in deciding what to get next.

You've already determined your preferences for line width (F and XF) and girth (more than the Logo's 9.3mm; amazingly, Goulet says the Safari has a section girth of only 8.9mm).

So your next question is how much weight do you like? Consider the Jinhao X750 (36g), X450 (42g), and 159 (50g), and toss in a Baoer 388 (a 27-28g Parker Sonnet homage which often suffers from a dry nib).

Here's a final update. I sent my 2000 to the Lamy repair centre and it finally came back today. I asked them to mount an EF nib and they also fixed the filling mechanism. It's a pleasure to write with, although I should say that the nib is much wetter than I expected, at least when writing with Lamy Blue ink.

Thanks again for all the fine recommendations!

Glad you got it to your liking.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
