Hello From Hong Kong

Hello,

My name is Kal. I'm a software developer in Hong Kong. Even though I'm an "I.T." guy, I still appreciate old-school things like mechanical watches and fountain pens.

I can't say I'm "pen mad". I recently bought myself, for my birthday, a Staedtler Initium Lignum fountain pen, with a plum wood barrel. I like it a lot, but I suddenly remember that I used to own two other fountain pens when I was younger, which is what brought me here, after a few hours of searching on Google, trying to find those old models.

One of them was a Parker Vector, brushed stainless steel, which I was sure I still had until my university years. It's pretty much a workhorse pen, nothing fancy. I'm pretty sure it's still produced today and that I can easily buy an authentic one from Amazon.com.

The other one is trickier. It was probably a Hero, and probably a Hero 329-2. I say "probably" because it was some 20 years ago that I owned it, during my early years in primary school. I remember it had a golden arrow head logo at the nib. After some search on Google, I think the closest thing is the Hero 329-2. However, Chinese brands being Chinese brands, I'm wary of counterfeits. I'm a native Hong Konger and I know that some of my "compatriots" on the otherside of the border will stop at nothing to counterfeit even the cheapest products.

Hello and welcome, I was born in HK, lived in Jardines Lookout and father worked at Jardines. Pens are hard to find in HK, there used to be some antique shops that sold them in Des Vouex Road in Central but I think they are gone now.

I hope that you enjoy FPN

Welcome, Kal !

Parker Vectors were very popular. I believe that they are currently produced by a company in India. You can search Ebay for them, as well as for the various models of HERO pens.

Hello Kal and welcome to FPN, from Cape Town, South Africa.

To sit at one's table on a sunny morning, with four clear hours of uninterruptible security, plenty of nice white paper, and a [fountain] pen - that is true happiness!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
