Help Needed On Gucci Doctor's Pen And Thermo

Recommended Posts

Hello All, and thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

I recently picked up an awfully nice little Gucci sterling and gold cased ballpoint pen and thermometer.

The pen is marked Gucci, Made in Italy, Sterling 925 (and a hallmark I cannot quite make out).

The 925 and hallmark are on the case, too. The thermometer is marked Made in England.

The gold bits look like they might be solid gold and the hallmark looks like it "might" be 585, making it 14K, but I'm not sure.

Has anyone seen one of these? I searched and can find no records or references.

Thanks,

Daniel

Hello Jar, and thanks for looking!

It is not 4561F1. I am attaching a couple of pics that will hopefully be clear enough to show the mark.

Can't read it. An Italian Makers Mark will be a star, number and then a two character location code. Here is an example showing one of the Montegrappa Guild Marks.

Thanks Jar!

I'm fairly certain this one begins with a two-digit number (53? 58?) and then a two character figural hallmark of some sort. Neither stamp in very clear.

Has anyone every seen one of these pen/thermo sets before?

Yes. A pen and thermometer was fairly common from many makers. Most were two pens, each devoted to one task and sold as a pair.

Yes, I've seen the Parker Vac-style thermometer holders.

I guess I was wondering if anyone has seen one of these Gucci pieces and if they knew anything about the date of manufacture.

oh...

I have actually never seen anything of this kind but it really seems a product Gucci had manufactured on commission by some silver/precious metal workshop in the 1960's. If you look at their ball and fountain pens, they basically chose a model ( which in most of the times is not really high quality by our standards) and had them personalized with the red/green band or with some logo addition. This is a nice and certainly stylish item which may have been produced by a workshop in Florence or anywhere else and that Gucci decide to market with their own logo..

By the ay, I cannot see the Gucci engraving or logo, is it on the other side?

Letizia, Thank you so much for the detailed analysis. I appreciate your input greatly!

Yes, the Gucci engraving is on the other side of the pen (the case is not marked, but the bands make it obvious). I will snap another photo to show where it is marked "Gucci."

Do you think the bands might be solid gold or gold filled if made on commission by a workshop as you suggest? The pen is marked Sterling and there is a hallmark on the sterling portion of the case, but the gold-colored bands are not marked.

Thanks again!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
