Wet Black & Dry Blue Ink

Im going to throw both together since they are just the opposite problem with the same goal. I have started to use my Preppy at work. Our new manager has decided we will only use one side of the page in our logbooks so they are easier to read. This means that I can get away with using fountain pens in it.

I have a Preppy F eyedropper that I use Noodlers black with. When it writes its perfectly fine in the notebook. The problem is that it rarely writes fine. Its a pain to get, and keep, flowing.

I use J. Herbin Bleu Pervenche in my Preppy EF and thats way to wet. It bleeds and feathers like crazy, even in my Brazil composition notebooks, which are generally thought to be a decent cheaper option.

I got these Preppys for the specific purpose of having dedicated black and blue pens that are good on regular paper, for things like work and school.

Does anyone have a suggestion on a black ink that is slightly wetter than Noodlers black? A blue ink, something more blue than Bleu Pervenche, thats dryer? With the ability Noodlers seems to have to be able to write on cheaper paper? The notebooks they use are Norcoms (the current box we have are Mexico made) if that helps.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. I am still very limited in the inks Ive used. Thank you for reading my rambilngs and thank you for all the help Im sure to, as I always do, get from everyone here.

*** Addendum: After I wrote this I thought to try to thin the noodlers black. I slowly added water a bit at a time until it was about 1/3 water (Im guessing thatd be quite a bit) to no improvement. Im starting to think it's the pen. What throws me is that it was fine with the cartridge and has slowly been getting worse since I eye-dropped it

Hi Gmm,

Try Aurora Black mixed with Pelikan 4001 Royal Blue or Turquoise.

Good luck. :)

Diamine Onyx Black or Jet Black and any Pelikan 4001 ink is very dry so it comes down to preference of color. Pelikan Turquoise is brighter than Royal Blue, but some may find it too bright for school notes.

Apart the problem with your Platinum Preppy, maybe you leave the pen uncapped for long periods of time without noticing and the nib dries up?

IMX, Noodler's Heart of Darkness is better behaved than original bulletproof Black. J. Herbin Perle Noire is widely regarded as a well-behaved, nicely dark black, with good flow, nice lubrication, high density/dye load, and not too much feathering.

If you're looking for a really well-behaved blue, you might try Pilot Blue-Black (INK-BB-350 or INK-BB-70). It's a moderately dark blue, an underwhelming and boring blue to look at, but one of the most fuss-free inks known, and it has pretty good water and fade resistance, to boot. And the value on the 350ml soda bottle is hard to beat.

For pretty, my favorite blue is Noodler's Blue Eel, widely cited as one of the closest to the fabled Parker Penman Sapphire out there. But what I wound up buying was original Noodler's Blue, which is VERY similar in color, faster to dry, less prone to smear, and a bit less lubricious (Noodler's American Eel inks have an addative intended to lubricate piston fill mechanisms).

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
