Hi, Folks!

I did a re-shoot of this pen that I think turned out better.

This is a Sheaffer Snorkel Clipper Pastel Gray c1952-1956. Pastel Gray was one of the original Snorkel colors introduced in 1952. The fountain pen has a Triumph palladium-silver alloy nib (some are hallmarked PdAg), polished stainless steel cap with a repeating pattern of four straight longitudinal engraved lines in a stepped grouping, gold-filled cap band, gold-filled clip, and plastic barrel. Barrel colors produced were black, burgundy, pastel gray, pastel blue (or aqua), pastel green, peacock blue, buckskin tan, mandarin orange, fiesta red, and sage green. The Clipper fountain pen is 5 1/2 inches long and sold for $18.50. The matching pencil sold for $7.50.

Hi, Folks!

The earliest reference I've seen on the new Snorkel colors is an ad in the Detroit Free Press from December 10, 1956 mentioning Mandarin Orange and Peacock Blue on the Statesman as "fashion hues."

The fountain pen has a two-tone plated 14 karat gold Triumph nib, polished stainless steel cap with a repeating pattern of four straight longitudinal engraved lines in a stepped grouping, gold-filled cap band, gold-filled clip, and plastic barrel. Barrel colors produced from 1952 to 1955 were black, burgundy, pastel gray, pastel blue (or aqua), and pastel green. Peacock blue, buckskin tan, mandarin orange, fiesta red, fern green, and periwinkle blue were added later. The Sentinel fountain pen is 5 ½ inches long and sold for $20.00 in 1954 and $22.50 by 1955. First year Snorkel Demonstrator, as shown by the gold coloured Snorkel. Though the cap has corrosion inside, presumably from the (brass?) cap insert, it doesn't *appear* to have been painted black inside at one time - all other Snorkel demos I have seen online so far have at least residual evidence of black paint inside the cap. This is my pen, recently acquired.

I would welcome discussion re: the cap paint or lack thereof.

Keto, the black paint on Demonstrator caps was actually applied to the outside of the cap. It rubs off somewhat easily, and yours appears to have been rubbed off completely.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
