Faber Castell School Pen

Recommended Posts

The neat thing about Faber Castell is that you can get the same nib in a Loom that you would in their $100 models. What about this School pen though? It's listed under $10 CAD. I wonder if it has the same nib as the Loom as well. That would be nuts!

Any thoughts?

I can't seem to find review videos of it yet.

Hi, I bought this pen earlier this year in the UK, it's a very lightweight, plastic school-type pen, @13g, but the nib is a very smooth medium writer.

The nib is very curved downwards for some reason, see my photo.

I can't say if it has the same qualities as the 'Loom', as I don't have one, but I would say it's a good value for money pen. It takes international cartridges.

Zooming in on the photos, it looks like the same steel nib without a breather hole and the perforated pattern on the nib.

The usual Loom nib actually doesn't have a breather hole in it either unless I am wrong.

Very nice! I may be able to get one tomorrow so I cannot wait!

School pens, in my experience, tend to be very good writers and take a fair bit of abuse. I personally like them for everyday, knock-about, use.

Looks a little like the Kakuno.

Can't tell if it's the same nib as the Loom/Ambition etc, but if it is, then I might just get one just to have a B nib.

(PS. Indeed, F-C steel nibs don't have breather holes. I always liked that about them.)

The nib/feed from the School pen is different from the nib/feed used in the Basic/Loom/Ambition etc. and they're not interchangeable. Perfectly serviceable nib on it's own, though.

School pen nib is on the right.

my girlfriend tried this pen and she was not impressed. i asked her to buy it for me and she said it wasn't even worth it at $10. I will have to try it myself when I go get a Loom

The writing performance between the School Pen and the Loom are very different. The School Pen that I tried writes very dry, and it's definitely not the same level of smoothness as the Loom.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
