Hello From Maryland, Usa

Hi Everyone,

I've been using fountain pens off and on since high school. In the past few years, I've gotten away from FP's and just carried a ballpoint or rollerball to the office. Then one day, I was at my parent's house and went to clean out some of my old stuff that was still boxed up. I found my old Lamy Al-Star that got me through HS and most of college! It rekindled my love of FP's, and caused me to do some research online. I was really impressed with everything I found, with FPN, the videos from Goulet Pens, Steven Brown, and others. This led me to purchase a TSWBI Eco (F) and a Pilot Custom 74 (M). What can I say...now I'm hooked again. Now all I have to do is expand my ink collection again!

Glad to be here and hoping to learn a lot from all the awesome users here.

Hello and welcome to FPN, from Cape Town, South Africa.

To sit at one's table on a sunny morning, with four clear hours of uninterruptible security, plenty of nice white paper, and a [fountain] pen - that is true happiness!

Welcome, "Z" !

Have you discovered, yet, that your LAMY Al-star can "swap" nibs very easily ? I believe that there are four or five different ones to try.

Which area of Maryland is your home ? A Parker 45 fountain pen took me through the University of Maryland (class of '71) . I use to be fairly familiar with the area.

Auf freiem Grund mit freiem Volke stehn.
Zum Augenblicke dürft ich sagen:
Verweile doch, du bist so schön !

Welcome home. Pull up stump and set a spell. What part of the Old Line State do you hide in?

Hi, jar, I'm in Prince George's County in Upper Marlboro.

HI Sasha,

I did find that out, but I haven't actually done it yet. I'm actually really happy with the medium nib that's on there now. It writes pretty good, even with my smallish bad handwriting :P. I have to say that I'm in love with the medium on the Custom 74, though. It's ever so slightly finer than the Lamy medium, but not as fine as the TSWBI fine.

Thank you all for the welcome!!

Being in Upper Marlboro, you're close to a couple of great fountain pen stores, Bertram's Inkwell in Rockville, MD https://www.bertramsinkwell.com/, and the Pen Boutique in Montgomery Mall https://www.penboutique.com/.

Bertram's and the Pen Boutique are about 15 minutes away from each other so it makes for a great pen shopping trip!

You also have Fahrney's Pens in DC, https://www.fahrneyspens.com.

The Baltimore Pen Show is in March, not sure of the 2018 dates yet, http://baltimorepenshow.com/contact/

I've been to Bertram's Inkwell and the Pen Boutique. I do love Bertram's Inkwell. Bert Oser is very knowledgeable and very passionate about pens. I have purchased from him and would gladly go back to him again. The Pen Boutique is also nice, they are a Montblanc dealer.

I've yet to go to Fahrney's Pens in DC, but want to make a trip there, the next time I'm in the city. And I am definitely planning on going to the Baltimore Pen Show next year. Hope to meet a lot of other pen fans there!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
