Problem With A Gama Pen

om8

Recommended Posts

I have recently bought a Gama pen from Gem & Co., Madras. It has developed an unpleasant smell such as that of burning rubber/plastic. May be due to keeping it in its plastic sleeve, certainly my other pen (a Hero 300, which was repaired by Gem and Co) doesn't have the smell. Any advice?

A photo would be nice, but it is almost certain yours is an ebonite pen.

Some indian ebonite pens can present a terrible smell when new.

Take it off the plastic sleeve, yes, because it agravates the smell. If you have access to some fine sawdust, rub the closed pen with it, carefully, and lightly, but repeatedly, for some a little while. Then clean well the dust with a cloth. Leave the pen outside any box, or sleeve, or whatever.

After some days the smell will start to diminesh, until it will disappear.

I don't have any sawdust, nor do I know where to get it. Can you suggest any alternatives? Otherwise I will leave it for a few days.

The sawdust step is not an obligation - it is just that it helps to absorb a little some of the smell, especially if it is a quite odorant sawdust.

If you don't have any, and cannot obtain it, just leave the pen outside, and the smell will slowly disappear.

Just to be clear: outside as in "not enclosed in a box or sleeve" - don't leave it outside in the sun, or it'll discolour!

Burning rubber smell is the smell of ebonite which is actually vulcanised rubber only. Just wash the pen thoroughly with pril liquid and dry it and then store it in open. The smell will go off. You will occasionally smell the material during use as your hand rubs the pen. HTH.

Absolutely! You did well on stressing it, Jamerelbe. :)

Hi Harry, how have you been doing?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
