Bespoke Leather Pens Case

This is a short review of a 'Leather Pens Case' I commissioned from Harry Rogers - Bucklehurst Ltd.

I open with a mention of Harry's 'Leather Messenger Bags', since the inception of the pens case was related to my purchase of one of Harry's excellent hand crafted leather messenger bags.

I have no affiliation with Harry, other than being a very satisfied customer.

A few weeks ago, I once again found myself searching the internet for a suitable Leather Messenger Bag. I was looking for something that was not too stiff, held a few bits and bobs associated with Fountain Pens, Journals and general carry items. I needed a bag that had just the essential components... not dozens of pockets to search through because I forgot in which pocket I put my keys!

Most of my searching had turned up sellers far away from the UK. There appeared to be no way of being able to make a firm decision whether the bag I was looking at, was of the right quality. It annoyed me that one of the most important aspects of the bags, the shoulder strap and padding, was often missing from illustrations.

I was looking for something special, something functional but not too shiny and obviously 'new' looking. While searching, I stumbled across Harry Rogers - Bucklehurst Leather. Cutting the story short, I checked out Harry's Web pages, watched his excellent videos of the bags being crafted. Impressed by the skill and quality of workmanship, I made a purchase. I am very pleased to have made that purchase.

The Pens Case...

Having received my new messenger bag, I took great delight in loading it up with all the things I though appropriate. When it came to the fountain pens, I was stumped for a decent pens case. A case I could be sure my pens were going to be fully protected, and safe. Since I don't carry more than four pens, generally, I needed a case that fitted the bill. I mailed Harry and asked him if he could help me out by making a pens case to match my bag, to a specific design. A design that would give me the confidence to carry any pen, knowing it is fully protected.

Harry took up the challenge! :) We exchanged email messages to outline what I considered to be the important details. The case needed to be soft. The pockets needed to be deep enough to hold the whole pen, I do not like the idea of clips rubbing together in pens rolls! The case needed to slip in the bag and be rather like a book in shape, rather than a pen roll. The lining material requested was to have a 'Japanese Print' theme. We had a plan! Harry asked me to leave it with him for a while and he would have a play with the idea....

I think you can see from the pictures just how effectively Harry has interpreted and employed his skills in making a fine quality pens case. I am truly enthralled with his work. I now have a pens case that will last for many years!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
