Specifically, a ~1944 Defender Balance (vacuum filler) that I recently bought through eBay.

I know that R&K is considered to be quite safe, but is still an Iron-Gall, so I figured I'd ask for advice before going ahead.

It looks like the Defender's had a 14kt nib which iron gall would not damage. Iron gall ink made for fountain pens will only be corrosive to steel or poorer quality stainless steel nibs, so are fine in most quality pens, along with not letting it dry out in a pen as you should avoid with any ink, and it will work as expected in any pen you have used it in so far.

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

      I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature.
