Hello From Dallas, Texas

Hi, I stumbled across this forum when I was looking for a new pen. I had read that fountain pens are superior to the ball-point so, I became interested. I thought I might need some guidance when looking for my first pen so here I am. Thanks.

Best Regards,

KXhac

Welcome aboard, from Charleston, SC. If you are a newbie, you might look at the Reference Pages on a website called Richard's Pens: it has a wealth of info about the basics of fountain pens, their use and care, and it will help you avoid making some mistakes. A couple of other websites with useful information for newbies include PenChalet, Jetpens and the Goulet Pen Company. Goulet has made quite a few videos available on their website and on YouTube, which are helpful with some procedures related to FP use, should you delve into using a fountain pen for your project. Bear in mind that how your writing appears on the page is a complex interplay of pen, paper, nib, ink, and handwriting, so be patient as you experiment with these variables. Enjoy, and good luck.

Hello and welcome to FPN, from Cape Town, South Africa.

To sit at one's table on a sunny morning, with four clear hours of uninterruptible security, plenty of nice white paper, and a [fountain] pen - that is true happiness!

Welcome, KXhac !

One has to press downward on the paper, so the ballpoint will track and roll out the paste ink. Pressing harder makes the pen slip in the hand, so a firmer grip on the pen is needed. The writing hand gets tired and cramped. The liquid ink of a fountain pen is attracted to the paper, and flows with slightest contact. This allow a relaxed grip, often the weight of the pen sufficient as writing pressure.

However, you may have misunderstood the comparison. Fountain pens are not necessarily superior to ballpoint pens. Fountain pen USERS are superior to ballpoint pen USERS. :lticaptd:

Soooooo, what do you currently use for daily writing ?

I use an old ball point I've had since last year. It's running on empty and, it's pretty expensive to get a new one so I am looking for a new pen. If you have any ideas, any at all please tell me.

I'm not sure that the dates for next year's show have been fixed, but check http://www.dallaspenshow.com from time to time, and eventually an announcement will be made.

There is a calendar of all US pen shows: http://home.netcom.com/~swirth/2000.htm

In the meantime, Dallas Pen Club information is here: http://www.dallaspenshow.com/wp/home-count-down/dallas-pen-club/

In addition to the regular meetings, which are on a weeknight, we have fairly regular Saturday morning breakfast meetings that are a lot of fun. I usually attend the Saturday meetings, since I am a fair distance away.

You were looking for a suggestion for a starter fountain pen. I usually recommend the Pilot Metropolitan. Go to gouletpens.com (lots of good videos for beginners), andersonpens.com, or jetpens.com, and you will find the Metropolitan and many other pens suitable for first-timers. Good luck in your search, and let us know what you decided to get.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
