Week #40 / 1 Oct: Arigato, Ishimaru - 2017 Weekly Ink Project

We love Sailor inks. We even have one of the longest threads dedicated to them (172 pages at the time of writing!). Reportedly all Sailor's inks are blended by one person, the ink master Osamu Ishimaru. This week, let's use a Sailor ink.

As usual, don't forget to share with us your choice of ink, your writing, drawing, doodling or anything with the ink in this thread. You can take a photo, make a scan, or even better, write letters and CRV reviews (what is a CRV?) and mail them to the many ink pals here. You are welcome to check back on this thread even when we've gone past this week.

I know that this thread is expressly intended for scans and photographs of Sailor inks, but given that it is also in a sense about Ishimaru-san, I hope it is okay to share a link to an interview with him:

I admit that I had visualized him differently, with the look of a traditional artisan! I was also surprised to read that he says ink should not be kept for longer than 2 years. I wonder what his reason is.

Forgive my ignorance —if I be guilty— but it is my understanding that Sailor makes inks under the name Sailor, Kobe, and Bungubox. Right? If I am correct, then my display of inks is appropriate. Please correct me if I should only include the inks with a Sailor label.

Here are the inks I currently have:

As most of us know, most (not all) are sheen monsters. Here are Sailor Apricot, Kin-mokusei and Kobe Brick:

Sailor Irori, Bungubox Lycoris Red, Sakura Mori, and Grenade:

Sailor Oku-yama, Kobe Maroon, and Bungubox L'Amant:

Bungubox First Love Sapphire, Sailor Souten, and Kobe Aegean Sea:

But the king of all sheen monsters from Sailor must be Yama-dori:

I find it disturbing how different other people's Yama Dori pictures look from my Yama Dori ink... :) Meanwhile, this is not Yama Dori....

I should have written, the only Sailor ink I have that I haven't already used...

Yes Herbert you're right. These are all Sailor inks. Kobe, Bung Box, Kingdom Note, etc. are all stationery store names in Japan. They have their own exclusive inks, all made by Sailor.

Running out of Sailors now, with only Blue Black, Cigar and Brown Algae remaining aloof in the drawer of shame.

This is almost he last of my Sailor Bung Box Silent Night - thank you hakura337  . The teensy bit in the bottom of the vial was efficiently sucked up by my Sheaffer Snorkel. What a wonderful design.

True, but that's only because no one at the NSA can quite figure out how to get a fountain pen to work. ;)

I don't have fancy equipment, so this will have to do. I took a photo. Here are 4 Sailor inks.

HalloweenHJB: Great photos! You do have the trick to capture sheen

Tas: Another fantastic drawing! :puddle: Post it in the 'Art Gallery'!

How silly is it to be living in Asia and never have gotten a single Sailor ink? Anyway that was me until... now; i just picked a bottle of the most loved Yama Dori. Looking forward to trying it..

This is a nice blue. I'll give you that. :)

. . . I just had to look up your review of Doyou. B)

How beautifully your reviews have evolved - your handwriting now is like a ribbon blowing in the air.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
