Psf On Lever Instead Of Ideal

Hi,

I just bought this 94, but its lever does not have the "IDEAL" logo, instead if has "PSF" written. Is this lever not original to the pen i.e. is it a replacement? Thanks!

PSF simply means "pocket self-filling" which you find on a lot of early Watermans. If you Google "Waterman PSF" you'll find lots of examples.

But not, IME, PSF on the lever. I don't recall ever seeing that.

"Generic" I don't know, but it seems to have cropped up on at least three different pens. (Also, what would 'generic' mean. I doubt anyone just made levers to be sold as parts.)

Hopefully someone more knowledgeable than I will jump in, but my money is on the idea that it was a maker that marked their pens that way, and their levers just happened to find their way onto other pens as replacements.

I can see it as a good choice on a Waterman (assuming you didn't have the correct lever) due to the similarity of the baseball/ globe iconography.

Best Regards, greg

Hmm.. Thanks Greg. I went through Lehrer's book on Waterman's too, and I have never seen such a logo on any of the levers. Its a good replacement, but a replacement indeed I think!

I believe that it is a French company that made Waterman-style pens. Not a Waterman, but quite similar and deliberately so.

Is your pen marked 94 on the base? Are there Waterman imprints elsewhere on the pen? If the body is clearly marked Waterman, then that is definitely a replacement lever box.

Yup, its a 94 Watermans. No doubt about the pen. I think youre right about the replacement lever. Written to the dealer about it for a partial refund so that I can source and replace with original. Thanks

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
