Decorative Bands

I have several pens with decorative bands. A few on Watermans pens from the early 20th century, but others on other brands

Do these have a particular name? other than decorative band

I don't know if there's a specific name for the types of bands shown. I suppose the second one might be termed a ferrule, to help hold the mother of pearl panels together.

 

The apparent decorative techniques used on them are repoussé (raising the metal into relief from the back) and chasing (indenting the metal from the front), but those are properly handwork done with hammers, punches and such, and many steps -- I imagine most pen bands were simply rolled or stamped on machines with dies.

Just call them cap bands or barrel bands, depending where they are found, and everyone will understand what you are talking about.

There are several sub-catagories. In some cases, hand engraved, engine turned, repousse or solid precious metal may be worthy of mention.

 

I like seeing the early stuff get a little love!
