Tibaldi Iride With Runny Nose

Richard F

Recommended Posts

I've been enjoying this pen for over 10 years, but when I put it in rotation recently I was dismayed to see it had developed a runny nose. I tried various inks to see if that would be the cure, but the flooding continued. Might the cause be a flaw in the pump vacuum filler? Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

I know Tibaldi used several, mostly proprietary, filler systems on these. They all have a weak spot in a seal. And great care must be taken on disassembly to prevent cracking the celluloid.

The Tibaldis I've had from this era disassembled from the nib/feed unit back. The nib and feed are in a metal collar which unscrews, and the filler system comes out the nib end.

I've seen several exploded views of the common types, either here or on FPG.

Good luck!

Thank you, esteroids, for this information. I'm not savvy enough to undertake a repair myself, and so I'll look for a professional to do the job. I've three Tibaldis and they are all superb writers. The Iride is not a pen that I want to let languish in storage.

This is a known issue with Iride. Some of the materials used in the filling system are prone to deteriorate and dissolve. This may be the cause of the leaking.

I advise you against trying to self repair. It is a unique system and, as it was previously said, some parts are impossible to source.

In Italy I know a couple of people that have the expertise to work on this pen. Firs suggestion is to ask www.lazzaronipenne.net Last year they reissued the Iride pen restoring the ones left in the Tibaldi liquidation stock. They have the expertise to repair the pen (No idea if they would be available or the cost).

Unfortunately, these beauties have this known weakness, but I was also firm on not giving up on enjoying them...

I may be a little late to give you a helping hand, but I have my Iride out for the repairs because it developed the same problem.

I also have a Trasparente at Stipula, the cost is quite reasonable, plus the assurance that the problem will be solved in-house.

You can just drop them a message at the address stated on the internet site, but I am warning you that it may take an eternity.

Done some detailed research as well as a few modest attempts first, but I hope I have it all solved now with both pens.

Naturally, I will be able to give a full report only when I will finally have both pens in my possession again.

Meanwhile, If anybody thinks that my experiences may be useful, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Will be more than happy to share my experiences and present options that I found for your own choosing.

Current modern daily users: Montegrappa Miya, Omas AM87, S.T.Dupont D-Line, Stipula Etruria Tuscany Dreams, Tibaldi Modello 60.

Current vintage daily users: Aurora 98p, Big Red Lucky Curve, MB622, P51, P75, Pelikan NN400.

I’ve had my Iride out for repair by a well-known restorer since September 2018. When I’ve asked for progress updates, I’ve been given reasonable excuses and promises of “I’ll get to it soon.” My latest email has received no response. I’m not saying I’m being ignored, and this man has a reputation as an expert, but I’m becoming concerned after 17 months. Any advice on how I should proceed?

Hi Richard,

I've repaired already at least12 of these pens with this problem , see: https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/topic/253178-tibaldi-iride-cracked-pump-housing/?hl=%2Btibaldi+%2Biride+%2Brepair

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
