What's The Toughest Cartridge You've Had?

I refill carts all the time, and need tough ones to handle the repeated removal and replacement. Private Reserve seems best, Kaweco seems weakest. What do you think?

I believe that Pilot cartridges are very sturdy and can be refilled many times with no problem.

But I have the feeling you're referring to standard international ones. As there is no difference in their design, it comes to other factors to judge their durability.

I feel that age is probably the biggest weakness. I've had some old Waterman long ones that didn't even lasted to empty them. That being said, I also think that short ones should be tougher than long ones. I have had good results with J. Herbin short cartridges.

Concerning the long ones, the most durable I've encountered are probably the Edelstein. I got the feeling that their material was of higher quality than the rest of the cartridges I've seen. But they are really expensive.

Sorry for the double post, I tried messaging Amber to have it removed, but her inbox appears to be full.

I'm sorry, I will fix the in box issue and I already fixed the double post.

My favorite long cartridges are the no longer available Magnums made for Levenger. They will fit an international, a Parker or an Aurora. They may also fit Lamy.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Platinum's cartridges are darn rigid... good luck giving them a squeeze if you're running dry.

Inked: Aurora Optima EF (Pelikan Tanzanite); Franklin Christoph Pocket 20 Needlepoint (Sailor Kiwa Guro); Sheaffers PFM I Reporter/Fine (Diamine Oxblood); Franklin Christoph 02 Medium Stub (Aurora Black); Platinum Plaisir Gunmetal EF (Platinum Brown); Platinum Preppy M (Platinum Blue-Black). Leaded: Palomino Blackwing 602; Lamy Scribble 0.7 (Pentel Ain Stein 2B); Uni Kuru Toga Roulette 0.5 (Uni Kuru Toga HB); Parker 51 Plum 0.9 (Pilot Neox HB)

Thanks, Amber. No reproach meant, just stating what I'd tried in order to be helpful.

Waterman cf, the early 50s model. It actually is partly steel. A proprietary cartridge frequently refilled as it no longer is in production and the convertor has been difficult to find at a low price in the past.

Which fountain pen is involved ? Not all cartridges are interchangeable. How often do you remove and refill ? If daily, a converter might be preferable.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
