Hello Margi,

Yes, they do. The two-piece barrel (gripping section & barrel tube) appeared on the 149 about 1983-84. I believe it was a bit earlier on the 146.

Best wishes, Barry

I can confirm I see the same as Barry mentions. I just got a 149 back from MB service with a new barrel and cap and the barrel is 2 piece.

Thanks very much to both of you its a new 90th anniversary 149

I thought it was, you can see a very fine mat join after the cap threads.

I have another question you may be able to help me with. I have just acquired another 149 that I am trying to date.

I think it is 1985-90

It has a 2 section barrel, split ebonite feed , 14k nib.

The truly amazing thing about it is its Mint not a mark on it, never been inked, not the original box. He claimed it had never been used.

Many Thanks

Mike

Hi Mike, Your new 149 was made between 1985 & 1990, as you mention. We can narrow those dates a bit if you look at the visible threads on the piston housing. Black plastic means 85-90 (with the other components you mentioned) and just 1990-91 for brass threads with your components. The nib is in fact, 14K, not 14C, right? Your components with a 14C nib would be ca. 1983-84. Regardless of its vintage, enjoy it along with your 90th anniversary 149. Best wishes, Barry And welcome to this forum.

Hi Thanks for reply

Yes it is 14K, and I also forgot to mention plastic threads on piston. Amazing 30 or so years old and never had ink in. I dont feel like filling it now!!

Thanks again

Mike

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
