Ink Like Robert Oster "fire And Ice" But With More Water Resistance?

Intensity

Recommended Posts

I don't really need the sheen portion of Robert Oster's "Fire and Ice", not that it shows up much anyway, but I LOVE the base color of it. It's my current favorite, along with "Diamine's Asa" Blue. Both are absolutely gorgeous glowing colors (I do not mean sheen, I mean they have a very bright and cheerful appearance), and I love using them together on the same page. Unlike "Asa Blue", which has quite reasonable amount of water resistance for not being labeled as water-resistasnt, R.O. "Fire and Ice" washes just about clean off the page almost immediately, if I put a [very thoroughly] dried sheet of writing under cool tap water. It's not that the page becomes blank, but the ink smears off enough for writing to become nearly illegible. I never get my writing wet on purpose, but still this kind of a complete vanishing act is concerning. I once had a flood in my apartment due to a burst pipe above and a lot of my notes got quite damp throughout.

I was extremely close to ordering a full bottle of "Fire and Ice", but now I have serious doubts if I should.

Has anyone who's used Oster's "Fire and Ice" also found another ink with the same base color and general intensity?

There really aren't any inks like it to begin with.

closest analogue I can think of that still pulls off sheen is sailor yama-dori, which has -tolerable- waterfastness. It's legible after getting wet, but nothing will really be waterproof.

Yama dori is definitely more turquoise, but still has that heavy red sheen.

Thank you. It's not really the sheen I'm after but rather the base color. I think Yama Dori is more teal compared to R.O.'s Fire and Ice, which has more blue-turquoise in comparison and is quite light/bright in a cursive italic line.

If you have some in your ink collection, ADD Ghost Blue. It won't change the color of the ink, but it will improve water resistance. Remember to mix in small amounts in vials not the entire bottle.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

That's a very interesting recommendation! I did not realize that Ghost Blue adds water resistance to other inks, I thought only the Ghost Blue itself was permanent.

Well, it's an off-label use. NT certainly doesn't recommend it, but I've been doing it for years.

I'm definitely going to try this mix with my favorite non-water-resistant inks!

I've also read about De Artamentis Dilution Liquid to increase ink flow/lubrication with other inks, not necessarily the Document Inks line.

My #8 ink that I use exclusively in my Pelikan Level pens is 25% DeA Document ink (I would have to go find the recipe). It is more than water resistant enough for my needs. I think the DeA Dok inks are good for mixing.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
