Circus 149

I saw a few illustrations of this pen, they were off a 149 with the stone inset into the nib. I immediately questioned the ability for that setup to properly work. That is, with out modification to the feed wouldn't the stone mount block the ink channel

*I could be completely off on that theory, I'm no expert in the design or operation of these pens.

Interesting couple of points.

Yes, it was a 149 that I held in my hand. The affirmation that it won't be produced, could either mean a) a 149 will not be produced and/or B) there may be a 145. But that would also mean that he was being coy, which would be strange.

Setting a stone on a nib is EXTREMELY difficult as I was told recently by the Montblanc design team. Because a nib is always moving or stretching/bending, having a stone to sit and not fall off is a technical challenge to them. They were actually proud to have finally made it happen on the Heritage serpent high limitation. According to them, it was a long process with cooling/heating etc.

Could mean that doing it for a 'measly' 149 eventually proved to be too costly or not worth the effort?

If they have gone to that much effort to make it work for a 149, then hopefully we will see it in another limited edition soon. A 149 skeleton would justify the effort!

Cancelled project. I would have liked to see the pictures.

Pens are like watches , once you start a collection, you can hardly go back. And pens like all fine luxury items do improve with time

Thats pretty awesome but I can see why theyd have problems keeping the stone in place. First thought that came to mind is setting the stone directly in the feed and having the ink channels go around the stone.

Not sure how accurate this is, but from the boutique information books they person I deal with said.

The stone would be set into a cup then that cup is set in place.

Thats strange that the specimen I saw in person had a big star instead of a persons figure on the nib :/ the star looked better to be honest

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
