Sharing just for fun and interest.

Tiny pencil seen at San Francisco Pen show.  Mabie's patent Oct 3, 1854.  Before he hooked up with Bard Bros.  One of the first Mabie items shown in the Moak Book.

That really is something special; how does it operate?

By coincidence the pencil pictured below arrived here in an auction lot.  Sadly I am being naughty because there is no maker's name - let alone that of Mabie/Mabie Todd/Mabie Todd & Bard etc!  However it's jolly clever and in full working order.  The lead expels by twisting its holder and the pencil is extended by pulling on the end where the stirrup is.  Ingenious!

To extend the pencil, the gold end near the pencil rotates.  To extend or retract the lead, rotate the nozzle. Pretty similar to the hard rubber pen/pencil combos that came next, like this one I posted about before.

A MT pencil very similar to the one in the OP was being regularly listed on ebay.co.uk for the first half of this year, (and may still be there somewhere).

Unlikely to be the same one as it appeared to be from a UK seller. The price came down somewhat over the months, but was in my view always eye-watering.

The asking price at the SF show was $55 USD. I could point you in the seller's direction if that is a good price to you.
