Greetings Fellow Fp Enthusiasts!

Enjoying a pen fetish since I can remember! Played around with calligraphy in my younger days, and after purchasing a set of Pilot Varsity disposable FPs (they're so smooth) in the spring of 2017 I caught the fountain pen bug. Next up was a Pilot MR Retro Pop Collection in turquoise. Researching ink and paper, I came across the Fountain Pen Network and I was hooked.

Thank you to all who post reviews, tips, links, etc. Your honest feedback is a huge help when researching! Because of this group I was confident enough to make my first purchase on eBay, which was of course a fountain pen - Monteverde Invincia. Cheers!

Welcome !

The Pilot Varsity pens are amazing. They accept neglect, and continue to perform. I think it is partly the Pilot ink, and partly the Varsity feed system. If you kept the Varsity pens, they can be refilled. It is a lot of fun. The members can tell you more than one method to refill the Varsity.

I ask that the membership adjust my impression that the Pilot MR and Pilot Metropolitan are the same pen, except using different cartridge formats. In either case, I find Pilot Black ink to be very cooperative in performance.

Greetings from Pittsburgh! :W2FPN:

The Pilot Metropolitan/MR is a good starter pen -- inexpensive, rugged, and perform well (although I prefer the medium nib -- I found an F nib to be scratchy when I bought my Metropolitan. I keep looking at the Retro Pop colors but I don't like the designs above the section for the most part (mine is plain silver tone).

I don't have an Invincia, but a while back tried someone's Monteverde Mountains of the World pen, and found the nib to be very smooth, so I think you'll probably like it.

I generally suggest people click on the "Read New Content" button when they log in, in order to get a good overview of a lot of topics. And to definitely have a look at the pinned Index to the Ink Reviews Forum.

But I also have to warn you -- we are all shameless enablers here, and will happily help you spend your discretionary funds on pens, inks, paper, books, repair tools, etc. ;)

Refilling the Varsity pens? How fun! Oh man, now I have another good reason to spend hours on the FPN. Thanks very much for the tip!

Hi Ruth - I forgot to mention that I also purchased a Noodler's demonstration. I read on here about the "Noodler's smell" and holy cow is it true. My eyes couldn't take it so I emptied the pen and rinsed it out. Fun pen, but not an everyday pen for me. Thank you for the suggestions - I'll be sure to check the "Read New Content" and "Index to Ink Reviews". Happy inking!

A lot of people complain about the odor of Noodler's pens -- but I've never had an issue (and I'm the one that my mom used to have smell the leftover meat to see if it had gone bad from having been in the fridge too long)!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
