Help With Info On An Old Sheaffer

Stratguy

Recommended Posts

I just found this old Sheaffer in a box of old things from my father-in-law who passed away more than 25 years ago. Can anyone tell me about it?

Thanks,

Steve

At first glance I'd say it was a Sheaffer Balance. Beyond that, though, without knowing the size of your pen I'd be loathe to say what model. But it does appear to have a "Lifetime" nib on it -- I have a Balance Oversize that belonged to my husband's grandfather originally, but it's black (and I had to get a replacement cap for it -- the story is that part of the pen was lost when my husband's grandfather rescued some woman who accidentally drove off a pier in Baltimore Harbor, and that Sheaffter sent him a replacement pen (which seems to be long gone).

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

Thank you for the info. It appears to be in need of restoration, although the barrel and cap are in good condition.

Looking at the clip design and referring to the article on Richard Binder's site, it looks like an early Balance. The long humped clip was shortened (he writes) in 1930 or 31. Nice pen and it wouldn't be too tricky to restore. What a special item to find.

Based on the profile, I'd say it's an oversized Balance in black & pearl . . . assuming it measures over 5" capped, that is. Photos of the shorty Balances often trip me up since they share a similar profile.

Early Lifetime Sheaffer's Balance, 1929-1930, pearl and black celluloid. The nib is very firm but usually very smooth. It almost certainly needs a new sac and, if properly restored, is one fantastic pen. Restoration is pretty straightforward (Danny Fudge does nice work). If you put your ear right next to it you will hear the pen calling to you. It wants to be repaired and used.

My best vintage writer is a pen just like yours. Once you try writing with it you will know why it is called a "balance." Enjoy.

Looks like an early 29ish Balance as the clip extends down just past the cap band & single tone nib. I have one on my desk now. Same finish. A favorite.

I ended up sending my pen to a very fine gentleman who I stumbled across on youtube. He was able to restore this Balance, and did a fantastic job. He recorded a youtube video which I've included. It's looks great, and writes beautifully. Thanks for everyone's help!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
