Noodler's Black Vs Black Eel?

Does the eel version have all the other qualities of the regular one? Will both serve as well for pen and ink drawings with a watercolor wash? Or will the paint make it feather or bleed?

Would appreciate your experiences with both.

The eel version has added chemicals to help it 'lubricate' piston pens or piston type filling systems. I find the eel series to feather like mad, even on decent types of papers. I only own a couple colors (blue and black).

Regular Noodler's back is a great ink overall, but takes a bit to dry. If you're washing over it, the top layer of ink may smear some I've found. So, unless you'll do your black a few days before and then your wash, maybe avoid it too.

I would suggest Noodler's Heart of Darkness. It's a permanent ink that tries to balance dry time, spreading, and color and all that. I think Noodler's hit the nail on the head with it. I use HoD and Aurora black as my go-to black inks mostly. I would suggest this for your uses.

Thanks. What papers you use show feathering or smearing for these inks? 140 lb Watercolor cellulose paper? 140 lb Watercolor 100% cotton paper. Or some other papers?

If you are going to use it for drawings, HOD, Black or Polar Black but not eel black. Eel black is perfect for cleaning out pens.

However, samples are your friend. Get a bunch of samples and try them out. Different inks were better with different pens / conditions / papers.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Eel has other issues...

Had it "lubricate" some of my pens to the point where pressure fit nibs don't stay pressure fit, or where there is epic drool (think English bulldog levels of drool), or where there is epic leakage.

Amber, how do you keep the "Polar" series from feathering all over the place? Admittedly, my only experience is with Polar Blue, which combines "polar" with "eel." Does that make it "bi-polar"?

Yes it is bipolar. 😁 when I last used polar black it was in a fine nib with good paper. I will have to try it in one of my huge nibs.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
