Wow, good to know that I'm not the only one who underlines in Orange. I have to agree with what you say about Iro inks. They flow well, give good lubrication and seem to do well on most papers. I just may end up using yu-yake, but I'm now more interested than ever to try all different orange samples that are soon to arrive.

Thanks for your input Doc. Maybe I'll do my first ink comparison/review when I'm done.

I'd love to see it when you do it!

I WISH!

But I think I am getting there....and I know that it's the same with paper. I just pulled out a Hated Ink, put it in an on-the-bubble pen, and fhey are now Together Forever.

All this is fascinating. Thanks for the thought-provoking post!

(Beautiful pen/ink/hand array you've got.)

Thank you for your kind comments.

Well Doc. if I had beautiful handwriting like yours, I'd do a lot more ink reviews, but I just may try this one on for size.

Thank you! You are very kind. But I am sure yours is more than sufficient for the task at hand. I look forward to seeing it!

No. I never stop looking.

I do understand this attitude only too well.

I sorta get the idea (I think). It reminds me of the great Mark Twain. Stopping collecting new inks is like stopping smoking. No problem! I've done that a hundred times.

Yeah - I think you and the late great Mark Twain are exactly correct. In spite of my rediscovery of my ink treasury, I notice that I am looking at other inks that I have never tried - Kyo-iro, Kobe Nagasawa, etc. I may just have to try some samples - some of the colors look intriguing. WHAT AM I SAYING!???!! I just got through telling everyone that I am satisfied with what I have! :yikes:

  • 2 weeks later...

Wow! Thank you for sharing!

I heard about the challenge, but truthfully I didn't have the guts to try going for one month with one pen and one ink. I am thinking about doing a similar challenge for one week. Maybe someday I can graduate to one pen for one month.

One typical scenario for me:

Read about an ink on FPN, saw samples and reviews on the internet, thought "this is just the right shade of light purple/dark blue/muddy green/etc.", bought it. Big disappointment, as it does not look like what I expected at all! And it feathers! And... So the ink goes into the drawer and spends some months there.

After a while, I take it out again and - without all those big expectations about The One Ink - it is just a great ink.

So, for me it is mostly too high and wrong expectations. But I am happy every time I find out what nice ink I have :)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
