I'm sure it would, if I could stop buying new inks long enough to write with them! :P :P :P

Yes.. it happened to me. So.. I didn't buy a bottle of ink in more than 2 years...Every new ink, that interest me, is just a slight different shade of what I have already...

I certainly understand. I have probably bought more ink than I will use in the next 5 years.

Hmm . . . It would save me a few dollars if I didn't buy ink for a couple of years.

Hi Dr. Penfection,

Yes. It has happened for me, too,...

...the only thing is that it keeps happening.

Be well. :)

In my case, the delight is somewhat planned. I rotate inks on a seasonal basis and look forward to seeing each set of inks come around again.

It's occurred to me -- on more than one occasion. But then I go "Ooh, shiny...."

Actually, I spend too much time trying to "fix" inks that aren't quite up there... but it's in addition to enjoying those that are, so not a real problem.

And, what I like does seem to change a bit, so that sometimes an ink I initially do not like much, can end up in the line of favorites...

But mostly, I love mixing them, even those that I only have samples of. And, I love chasing that particular color that is so clear in my mind, and refuses to emerge in the mixing vial... Playing and writing/drawing with fountain pens has become so much more fun since I discovered playing with ink! and that I only have this place to thank for...

Thank you, Anthony! Actually, isn't it great that it keeps happening? I mean, there was a reason we bought all this ink, isn't there? I have cleaned some pens this afternoon, and am looking forward to inking them up with ink I haven't used in years! I am looking forward to the re-run.

Hmm. . . that's a great idea! I live in two different states, and always make sure that I have the same ink in each place. Maybe what I should do is leave some in Nevada and the others in Colorado, and then look forward to using those when I am in that place. Brilliant!

Yes, I understand that excitement. But for me it is "ooh, sheeny . . ."

That's really interesting. Truthfully, I haven't played with mixing much. I just don't seem to have the time I need to do that. For me it is "clean 'em and fill 'em". Perhaps one of these days . . .

I'm on the same page Doc. No matter how much ink I buy, ultimately I end up going back to the same tried and true inks, and favorite colors. By the way I'm a big fan of De Atramentis Steel Blue, it's one of my regulars.

Recently my tastes have expanded to orange inks. That's given me an excuse to buy a bunch of samples and still get some thrills from trying new inks.

The orange ink fad aside, I'm pretty happy with my inks. I've been giving away bottles that I don't use to people I know will put them to good use.

Yes, indeed! I understand completely! Actually, I just went through the orange fad. I tried several - and there are some very nice ones out there - but settled on Pilot Iroshizuku Yu-Yake as my main orange, and J. Herbin Orange Indien as runner up. What oranges do you like?

Yes. Across the board... with the only exception being the pens I've recently flushed will be replaced with other pens so everyone gets a chance to get their nibs dirty. :D

I've been reading all the Orange Ink discussions on here, but I've only just begun my journey into the Oranges. So far, I've tried Robert Oster Orange, and Iro, you-yake. I have a sample assortment of Orange Inks on the way from Goulet's. They should arrive any day. Most of everyone's favorites seem to be included in that.

First impression on the two I've tried so far: I love the color of the Robt Oster Orange, its more of the Orange that I initially had in mind. I know that comparing most inks to iroshizuku is unfair. But compared to the Iro, the lubrication factor is pretty low In the Oster Ink. Don't know about feathering or bleed through yet. The Iro yu-yake seems to have a faint touch of red to it, which I'm not opposed to. But like I said, I haven't a lot for comparison yet, and I'm keeping my mind open.

I like to underline with Orange, rather than use conventional highlighters. I'm thinking of replacing my orange gel pens. But the ink has to perform well on lower quality copier paper.

So, that's my quest.

I use orange inks for underlining and making notations. I have found that having at least one vivid orange ink really helps. I have to say I am partial to Pilot Iro inks, and use Yu-Yake, Momiji, and Chiku-Rin for most of my annotation work. They work great!

Wow, good to know that I'm not the only one who underlines in Orange. I have to agree with what you say about Iro inks. They flow well, give good lubrication and seem to do well on most papers. I just may end up using yu-yake, but I'm now more interested than ever to try all different orange samples that are soon to arrive.

Thanks for your input Doc. Maybe I'll do my first ink comparison/review when I'm done.

I WISH!

But I think I am getting there....and I know that it's the same with paper. I just pulled out a Hated Ink, put it in an on-the-bubble pen, and fhey are now Together Forever.

All this is fascinating. Thanks for the thought-provoking post!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
