Plato 66 Burgundy Lever-Fill From India 1961

Hi, Folks!

This is a burgundy Plato 66 lever-fill pen from India dated 1961 on the barrel imprint. Plato was a brand of the Mhatre Pen Plastic Industries Private Limited which was incorporated in 1951. The external design is very similar to the UK Parker Duofold Maxima, introduced in 1958. It is an easy to service lever fill pen where the section unscrews from the barrel, giving quick access to the ink sac. The metal parts are gold plated, with a quite bright yellow gold. The stainless steel nib is lightly gold plated and stamped SUPER QLTY PLATO TIPPED. It's 5 1/8 inches long and the barrel imprint reads PLATO "66" over REGD. over MADE IN INDIA over 1961. Mhatre stamped almost every part of the pen with the PLATO brand, including the clip, section, lever, barrel and nib.

The information on these pens is very limited. I appreciate members of FPN who have posted about them. Any chance of more information on the 66, including when they were made and how many different colors there are?
Thanks!

Here are a couple of mine. The larger one has a similarly imprinted nib and section to yours. The small one is not actually labeled as a 66, but I thought I would include it. It's imprint, though faded appears to be simply the Plato logo and REGD. Both are eyedroppers.

Thanks! You have a beautiful example and wonderful photography!!

I seem to recall seeing 66's on eBay from the 1950's to 1970's, by the way. I have seen levers and eyedroppers. Celluloid and plastic. I also have a vacumatic-filling Plato 88; a relative, I suppose.

I have a PLATO 66 in Cocoa colour. It appears to have no filling system/reservoir?

I just finished restoring (about 15 minutes ago) this Plato 66 from 1960. I picked it up yesterday at the Long Island Pen Show.

For $15 I just couldn't resist the celluloid!

It writes better than I expected it to. The nib isn't about to win any awards, but it writes a respectable, wet, medium line. Not too bad for $15!

Sorry about the cel phone photos... They're the best I could muster.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
