A New Baby Bird On The Way!

Well, new to me.

I said I was going to go to SF Pen show this weekend to bring home a Pelikan, particularly a black-blue M400 or M600. I have been looking forward to the show, but most of all eager to purchase my first M400 or M600.

Sometimes we can't always do what we want. My schedule has changed and I won't be able to go.

My history with Pelikan FPs is limited. I have a P30, but it unfortunately leaks and needs to be repaired next time I go to a show. I have many Lamys, Deltas, a Montblanc or two, and a host of others, but I have always wanted a Souveran M400 or M600.

So to ease my disappointment (yes, probably the wrong motivation), I decided to see what might be available online. Before looking, however, I read through many posts about determining authentic Pelikans from counterfeit. I found what appears to me to be an authentic NOS Pelikan Souveran M400 in black-blue. I went ahead and purchased the pen knowing that if it is not as advertised, I can return it. I should receive it next week.

So, my dear fellow FPNers, what do you think? Does it appear to be authentic? Any idea how old? I do not have a picture of the end of the cap, but it appears not to be the new metal end cap.

I can post additional pictures when I receive the pen.

What are your insights?

All the feathers are of the correct color. So, it must be a legit offspring of mama Pelikan.

I believe it must be from around 2003-2010, since it doesn't have the gold-plated logo (but I'm not sure about these dates. Someone else will know for sure).

Congrats and enjoy the new bird. But watch out, they multiply fast ;)

Looks all good - and congratulations!

Agree with Lam1 - newer production.

I hope you like a wet juicy M :) - I already see it inked with Cobalt Blue

I know there's a website which shows the different models and logos, but I don't remember the URL offhand (sorry). I do know, from correspondence with someone at Pelikan a couple of years ago, that the logos change (slightly) about every seven years or so.

To my eye the pen looks legit. Blue-black is my favorite color of the birdies, but ironically was the last one for me to get (an M405 last spring, while also splurging on an M405 Stresemann in Anthracite). I have an EF nib on the Blue-Black and I love it.

Your real fear, like Lam1 said, is that they tend to multiply.... B)

Thank you so much much! Yes, if she writes like I hope (wet and smooth) then I fear there will be more along the way. And yes, I am planning already. The white tortoise variety may the next. I liked the white rose variety, but I am afraid they are just too rare for my budget.

Thank you so much! Yes, I love wet juicy pens, so I am very hopeful. As to first inks, I am thinking either GvFC Cobalt Blue, J. Herbin Eclat de Saphir, Pilot Iroshizuku Tsuyu-Kusa or perhaps even Callifolio Bleu Ultramarine. Not sure yet.

Congratulations. There WILL be more :D

The website Ruth referred to above is

https://www.pelikan-collectibles.com/en/Pelikan/Models/Souveraen-Series/M400-Basis/index.html

Not only is it a wealth of info about all varieties of Pelikan, it is also a great shopping/check list... use at your own risk :excl:

As was discussed in another thread, there don't seem to be any reports of counterfeit Pelikans at this time.

The problem that I have seen on ebay is mismatched and/or misidentified pens. When I was looking for grey- and blue-marbled M200s, I say several that were comprised of a pre-97 cap with a post-97 barrel and vice versa. My M250 Levenger was listed as a M400.

That blue/black is beautiful. I can never decide which I like better, the blue or the red, which is why I haven't bought either.

It's hard work to tell which is Old Harry when everybody's got boots on.

My baby blue bird arrived in fine shape!

What a lovely pen! I immediately checked her over for any microscratches or any other damage, and I must say that she is brand new. I cleaned her up thoroughly, filled her J. Herbin Eclat de Saphir and found that she writes smoothly with a very nice line. At this early point, I would not say that she is a wet pen, but she is certainly not dry at all. With use, I know she will be perfect.

She is a new older hatch - post 2003 certainly. On the end cap, which is black, there is only one chick, indicative of a pen manufactured between 2003-2010. (Thank you, Joshua of Pelikan's Perch - https://thepelikansperch.com/ - for some great information!).

So, now, I think I will be on the lookout for an M600.

Thank you all for your comments!

It's a beautiful pen and appears fully genuine. The cap top is hard to see but does not appear to be plated to me. If that's the case, the the pen is pre-2010. Likely made in the prior decade.

PELIKAN - Too many birds in the flock to count. My pen chest has proven to be a most fertile breeding ground.

Thank you for your comment! It is a lovely pen and I am really enjoying it. It does not have a plated top, so it is pre-2010. It is a bit smaller than I thought. I think my next bird will probably be a m600 or maybe even an m800. But I must say that my little bird writes very nicely. I am wondering however if I could purchase a stub nib for this little bird. Any ideas?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
